The Nordic-themed Scandinavian Festival, which is produced by Scandinavian American Culture and Historical Foundation is set to go underway from June 4th.
After a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic, the largest Nordic festival In Southern California’s California Lutheran University will return on June 4 and June 5.
The festival director Mindy Miller said, “It’s been challenging to resurrect a large-scale community event like this post-pandemic, from reengaging volunteers to finding alternatives for performing groups and vendors that didn’t survive COVID-19–related challenges, but the Scandinavian American Cultural and Historical Foundation has worked incredibly hard for nine months to make it happen. We are thrilled to be back with a mix of popular longtime activities, new offerings, and extended hours.”
Iceland, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Sweden, and the Sami people of Scandinavia’s Arctic areas will be honored at the 45th Scandinavian festival. Dancing, music, food, demonstrations, crafts, vendors, and activities for all ages will be available at Buth Park and Memorial Field on both days from 10 am to 6 pm.
The festival will feature a gaming area for competitive activities for the first time, as well as Viking chess, a Middle Ages strategy game. Dala horse croquet and kubb, an ancient Viking game, are also available.
The famed storyteller Robert Seutter (aka True Thomas), the pianist and entertainer Ross Sutter, and audience-participation renditions of “Three Billy Goats Gruff” are among the performers on the Children’s stage. Every day at 5 pm, the popular ABBAFab tribute band will perform on the Main Stage. Ann-Marita Garsed, Grim Bernhoft, and Rainy Eyes, as well as the Swedish Folk Dance Club of Los Angeles, are among the other Main Stage artists.
Visitors can stroll through an authentic Viking village and a Sami siidastallan, or community meeting, during the festival.
Children may make souvenirs representing each Scandinavian country in the Nordic Country Crafts Tent and earn a prize for collecting passport stickers from each activity. Children and adults can make flower and ribbon head wreaths and dance around the maypole.
