Pop queen of the industry, Beyoncé is facing backlash due to the use of ableist slurs in her latest song ‘Heated’. According to her publicist, the lyrics will be altered soon.
Beyoncé’s latest album ‘Renaissance’ is creating a huge buzz in the music industry but amidst the success, a controversy has taken birth.
The singer has decided to remove some of the offensive lyrics from her track ‘Heated’ which is appearing in her latest album. It has been claimed that the singer used her song which is quite insulting to listeners with disabilities.
In the latest song, she sings “sp** on that a**,” at the end which is a colloquially used term for the word “spastic”. The term colloquially means freaking out or going crazy but the original medical term referred to spasms that occur from cerebral palsy. It is quite evident that the term is widely used in a derogative manner in order to make fun of people with disabilities and palsy.
With the use of the word in her latest album, backlash took place in no time. The publicist of the singer said that the term was not “used intentionally in a harmful way.”
Disability advocate Hannah Diviney said, “So @Beyonce used the word ‘sp**’ in her new song ‘Heated’. Feels like a slap in the face to me, the disabled community, and the progress we tried to make with Lizzo,” on Twitter. She further stated, “Guess I’ll just keep telling the whole industry to ‘do better’ until ableist slurs disappear from music.”

As Beyoncé is one of the legendary singers in the pop music industry, the fans of the singer could not “excuse her use of ableist language”. Disability equality charity Scope expressed it as a “deeply offensive term”.
A few weeks back, Lizzo also received a backlash due to the usage of ableist lyrics in her latest track ‘Grrrls’. The singer quickly took responsibility and altered the lyrics after addressing it.
Lizzo said on social media, “Let me make one thing clear: I never want to promote derogatory language. As a fat black woman in America, I’ve had many hurtful words used against me so I overstand the power words can have.”
The singer further said, “As an influential artist, I’m dedicated to being part of the change I’ve been waiting to see in the world.” Perhaps, that change can come through music.
Beyoncé is currently thinking of altering the lyrics as well, according to the star’s publicist.
