After being held online for two years due to the pandemic, the world’s biggest K-pop festival KCON marked its in-person return in 2022. After its massive success, the KCON has now announced the dates for the 2023 festival that will be held in the USA, Japan, and Thailand. KCON has earned its reputation as a major convention and music festival that pays tribute to Korean pop culture and entertainment. Before the COVID-19 pandemic break, the annual convention has been held in countries like the U.S., Saudi Arabia, Australia, France, and Japan, among others, since 2012.

The convention has announced via Twitter their return to Thailand in March after almost four years. March 18 and 19 have been designated as the dates for KCON Thailand where performances by those like iKON, G)I-DLE, GOT7’s BamBam, and Youngjae have been lined up.

After Thailand, the convention will move to Tokyo, Japan, and will continue from  May 12 to 14 at the Makuhari Messe convention center, after last year’s two-day Chiba event where K-pop boy band TO1 performed alongside J-pop artists like JO1 and INI. In 2022, KCON Japan was celebrated at Tokyo’s Ariake Arena, highlighted by performances of artists like ATEEZ, TO1, TOMORROW X TOGETHER,  LE SSERAFIM, Monsta X‘s Kihyun, fromis_9, and NewJeans among other K-pop and J-pop performers.

Following Japan, the KCON will head to Los Angeles, where the convention will be held from August 18 to 20 at the LA Convention Center and Crypto.com Arena. Apart from the in-person events, the entire KCON 2023 will be available online for fans around the globe. The previous year KCON LA had reported 90,000 fans through its three days of meet-and-greets, workshops, convention, and concerts by artists like Kep1er, TO1, The Boyz, ITZY, ATEEZ, and Stray Kids among others.

For the events that would take place in the three countries, KCON has planned customized content that would be at par with the cities and their customs and standards. The head of the CJ ENM’s Convention Live Business Department, Kim Hyun Soo, was elated as he spoke about the event that “started with 10,000 audience members in 2012, and has now established itself as the world’s largest K-culture festival”. He also mentioned that the convention is an ever-evolving platform and they would “pour (their) strength into actively and positively introducing K-pop and K-culture.”

In spite of the competition posed by the new K-pop festival startups, namely We Bridge Music Festival & Expo and KAMP, as well as K-pop artists making increasing appearances at long-running U.S. music fests like Coachella and Lollapalooza, KCON’s attendance and audience engagement remains strong and steady even after a decade.
