The talented cousin duo Baby Keem and Kendrick Lamar return with a new music video titled ‘The Hillbillies’, that shows the artists goofing around and chilling together.
Winning over the hearts of fans, the iconic duo of Baby Keem and Kendrick Lamar return with their delightful shenanigans in the latest music video produced by Surf Gang’s Evil Giane and directed by Neal Farmer, ‘The Hillbillies’. The video comes as a montage of some of the most laid-back and fun-filled moments shared by the cousins, and some of the clips appear to have been shot during the off-days of the Big Steppers Tour that took place the previous year. The three-minute and thirty-four seconds long video opens with the glitchy appearance of an old recorded videotape and presents itself entirely in VHS mode, giving the recorded moments a more natural and realistic touch and giving it a vlog-like appearance.
‘The Hillbillies’ combines samples of Bon Iver’s “PDLIF” and Jersey Club drums with quirky adlibs and tag-team rap, which gives it the effect of being a sequel to the “range brothers” of The Melodic Blue. The duo seems to let down their masks and worries as they are seen thoroughly enjoying hanging out with each other, as the video shows them exploring malls and hotels, and dragging the semi-confused front-desk staff into their fun. They are even heard comparing themselves to the football icons Messi and Neymar Jr. and bragging about buying land in Europe while shaking their legs on airplanes, goofing around at Los Angeles’ Dodger Stadium with Tyler, the Creator, and having a go on their PlayStation.
Fans were quick to point out that the video showed the duo being the most relaxed they have appeared in years and the YouTube comment section was flooded with comments like: “I really like this song because it’s just Kendrick and Keem having fun in the studio. It’s awesome because they’re cousins and the chemistry is unmatched”. As the duo is seen slipping into their comfort zones, they riff for longer and win over listeners with their witty wordplay, chilled-out delivery, and screen presence.
The cameo of Tyler, the Creator had a special significance as the clip displayed a ‘Camp Flog Gnaw 2023′ button on a jacket, thereby confirming the LA-based carnival’s long-awaited return after its hiatus since 2020. Though the line-up for the 2023 Carnival has not yet been announced officially, the video sure drops hints that both Kendrick Lamar and Baby Keem can be expected to perform in it. The 2019 iteration of the festivals showcased performances by artists like Solange, Juice WRLD and had Drake as a surprise headliner.
