Bklyn Dictator

DMR: Hello, Bklyn Dictator™. How are you doing today?

Bklyn Dictator™: Blessed & living.  How about you?

DMR: Your latest single ‘I AM YOUR DJ’ seems to have created quite a buzz. How are you feeling about the success of the track?

Bklyn Dictator™: I’m really impressed at the progress of the record and how it’s being received. I felt like DJ’s needed something for them, something we can call “our” theme music.

DMR: After your previous single ‘Pole Position’ were you hoping you would get such a hard noise for your next track as well?

Bklyn Dictator™: Not at all!!!  I honestly have so much music in the archives ready for the world to hear. I just put this out as a feeler to see what the temperature was out there., I never expected IAYDJ to be the one to open the flood gates. I do appreciate the generous feedback and I’m certainly not complaining.

DMR: You have been making and producing music since the ’90s. What has the journey since then been like?

Bklyn Dictator™: It’s been a long time coming but extremely eventful and fun.  I feel like everything that has taken place in my Proffessional and creative journey is a much needed chapter in the BKDTR™️ book of amazing stories and fantastical twists.

DMR: Did you face any hardships during this long musical journey in the industry?

Bklyn Dictator™: Absolutely.  There have been many deals that have fell through, disloyal artist I have worked with, fake industry friends, anything you can imagine to discourage an artist has happened. What I have learned from these experiences is that cream rises to the top and what goes around comes around 10x’s harder.

DMR: Were you always interested in making electronic music? Or are there any other genres that captured your attention?

Bklyn Dictator™: Yes, very much so. As a  music producer you come across all types of genres looking for samples, drums, and obscure rhythmic melodies. Although I’m deeply rooted in golden era Hip-Hop, Chicago House music, and classic R&B, electronic music has always piqued my interest. The band Kraftwerk, and the great English musician Gary Numan  are both in my top 20 greatest artists of all time. Being exposed to early break beats from my brother, the prolific 80’s graffiti writer Veefer, the first time I heard Planet Rock by Afrika Bambaataa & the Soulsonic Force I was mesmerized. At that point, I knew being a creative black kid from Brooklyn, embracing electronic music was cool.

DMR: If you had to choose a favorite out of all the great musicians you have worked with previously, who would that be? And why?

Bklyn Dictator™: I would have to say there are a few but without question the GOAT, Dr. Dre. Although the time we spent together was short lived, it was the moment I knew I had a sound. Just to be in the room with such an icon exchanging thoughts, musical ideas and opinions was surreal to me at the time.  There are many great architects of music worth mentioning but Dr. Dre took the sound of urban Hip Hop music for my generation to a different place. It was an honor to be chosen to work with him.

DMR: If you weren’t a musician, if you were not a part of the music industry, which career path do you think you would have chosen?

Bklyn Dictator™: Excellent question. I would probably be an extreme wild life photographer. To go one step further, I would love to make one beautifully shot Indy film for the big screen before I am done. I think music and images work hand and hand.  It’s pretty impossible to have one without the other and have a quality project at the end.

DMR: Are there any new artists that you would like to collaborate with?

Bklyn Dictator™: Kaytranada is one I have been watching for a while now. His sound is pretty well rounded, hard hitting, and consistent.  Fred Again, Skrillex, Disclosure, these guys are pushing the boundaries, some of the drill stuff is cool too. Honestly, I wouldn’t mind working with any artist because it’s always gonna be fresh and new.

DMR: What message would you like to give to the new talents who are just starting in the industry?

Bklyn Dictator™: Never be afraid to stretch the limits or stay true to your art.

Those that don’t fuck with it or get the vision don’t matter anyway, you don’t need them. Always focus on your core fan base and those that support what you do. Lastly, it takes many years to get noticed, don’t get discouraged, keep creating.

DMR: How soon can we expect another banger from you? Are you planning to produce a full-length album?

Bklyn Dictator™: In the next couple of months I am releasing a project called “Veefer’s Beat Tape”. It will be a montage of more Hip Hop styled beats with interludes. The project was inspired by the writer Veefer’s bombing style and the type of music consumed during a late night mission. Later this year I will be dropping my first EP “We Don’t Belong Here”.

DMR: Are there any special messages for your fans and supporters?

Bklyn Dictator™: My fans are dear to me. I like the fact that it’s just us and we are growing together. I feel comfortable taking creative chances, my supporters get the vision before I do. I can’t thank them enough.
