A civil lawsuit against Lizzo was filed on Tuesday where three of her singer’s former dancers accused the Grammy winner and her production company of sexual assault and creating a hostile work environment. The lawsuit was filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court that claimed the ‘Rumors’ singer pressured her dancers to engage with nude dancers at a strip club in Amsterdam in late February. The lawsuit also claims that Lizzo shamed one of those three dancers for gaining weight before firing her from her job.
The plaintiffs are Arianna Davis, Crystal Williams, and Noelle Rodriguez who made numerous accusations that include sexual, racial, and religious harassment along with assault, false imprisonment, and disability discrimination. The lawsuit named Lizzo, originally known as Melissa Viviane Jefferson, the captain of her dance team Shirlene Quigley, and her production company Big Grrrl Big Touring Inc., according to a report by Reuters.
The legal complaint seeks unspecified damages where on the other hand, representatives of the ‘Truth Hurts’ singer have not yet responded to the charges or made any comments to the media. The plaintiff’s attorney Ron Zambrano in a statement said, “The stunning nature of how Lizzo and her management team treated their performers seems to go against everything Lizzo stands for publicly, while privately she weight-shames her dancers and demeans them in ways that are not only illegal but absolutely demoralizing”. The suit stated that one of the plaintiffs, Ms. Davis was pressured by the singer and her team to engage in a nude photoshoot for a dance competition despite clearly stating her discomfort. Ms. Davis also claimed that she feared of losing her job if she did not comply with the absurd request of the 35-year-old singer.
The lawsuit also alleged that Ms. Quigley, the captain of Lizzo’s dance team harassed the plaintiffs as she subjected them to her religious beliefs against the dancers’ will. “Ms. Quigley was not only vocal about her religious belief but took every opportunity to proselytize to any and all in her presence regardless of protestations,” the legal complaint stated. It also claimed that Quigley publicly revealed personal details about Ms. Davis and her virginity on social media without her consent and forced the subject into uncomfortable conversations. According to the legal suit, Rodriguez resigned over the unfathomable behavior and both Ms. Davis and Ms. Williams were eventually fired from her productions team. After unimaginable disrespect and mental abuse, the three dancers finally decided to speak up.
