Phenomenal Musician ‘Sachin Da’ Stole Millions of Hearts with his Timeless Magic

Starting his career as a radio singer the legendary musician, S.D. Burman captivated hearts with his soulful compositions which remain cult-classic to date.

Sachin Dev Burman is known for adding grammar to the Hindi Film Music. He was fondly called Burman Dada or Sachin Da by those who loved and admired the person as well as his master creations over the decades. He was best known for his musical experiment, he used to play around not only with the compositions but with the background sounds as well. The music magician was born in a royal household located in Tripura, loved fishing, and was fond of football. He was heavily influenced by Bengali folk music such as ‘Gajan’, ‘Kirtan’, ‘Baul’, and many more. The phenomenal artist coached another mastero, his son RD Burman who later became a legend himself. The greatest performer of all time was born on the 1st of October, 1 906, and passed away in the very same month on the 31st of 1975.

To celebrate the magical creations of such a magnificent artist on his birth anniversary here are the top ten music tracks. To be honest it is not easy to pick just ten musical ballads from the enormous number of soulful tracks. However, the list goes as –

Abhimaan –

 

The 1973 musical drama movie was directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, and starred Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan, David, and Arsani Bindu, based on a Bengali film named ‘Bilambita Loy’. Burman delivered mind-blowing songs as the brilliant story demanded some superb creations to stand out. The profound played his magic sticks of music as he blended commercial and classical and composed timeless musicals that still feel creatively refreshing. ‘Tere Mere Milan Ki Yeh Raina’, ‘Meet Na Mila Re Man Ke’, ‘Ab To Hai Tumse’ and ‘Piya Bina Piya Bina’ the beautiful songs performed by another legend Lata Mangeshkar who had taken the bar to a higher level, nearly impossible to meet by any other.

Zindagi Zindagi –

The 1972 romantic film was directed by Tapan Sinha and stars Sunil Dutt, Deb Mukherjee, Farida Jalal, Ashok Kumar, and Waheeda Rehman.  But the film didn’t get as enough credit as it deserved. The film holds many forgotten magical creations because the movie didn’t do well at the box office. Though Burman managed to brag a National Film Award home for the best music director. The film offered magnificent tunes like ‘Piya Tune Kya Kiya Re’ and ‘Zindagi Ai Zindagi’.

Aradhana –

 The 1969 romantic drama was directed by Shakti Samanta, and starring Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore. The beautiful soundtrack of the film was composed by Burman and the lyrics were written by Anand Bakshi. The magician wrote terrific music tracks for films such as ‘Mere Sapno Ki Rani’, ‘Roop Tera Mastana’ and ‘Kora Kagaz Tha Yeh Man Mera’ which were a turning point in Bollywood history. Though after being nominated for the best music director at Filmfare he didn’t win he bragged the National Award for the best playback singer male for the song ‘Safal Hogi Teri Aradhana’.

Jewel Thief –

 

The 1967 spy thriller film was directed by Vijay Anand, and starring Ashok Kumar, Dev Anand, Tanuja, Helen, etc. The film revolves around the central character Dev Anand who plays the role of a jewelry expert and the police constantly trying to catch the notorious thief, the thoroughly engaging film offers timeless creation like ‘Hothon Mein Aisi Baat’ became the standout musical which continues to spread its aura. The legendary musician wrapped his brilliant melodious songs with beautiful lyrics and charming vocals.

Guide –

 The 1965 romantic drama starring Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman, the story based on R.K. Narayan’s novel ‘The Guide’ comes nearest if the question is about musical perfection. The brilliant musicals of the film were written by ace lyricist Shailendra who created an emotional joy-ride for the listeners. ‘Aaj Phir Jeene Ki Tamanna Hai’, ‘Din Dhal Jaaye’, ‘Gaata Rahe Mera Dil’, ‘Tere Mere Sapne’ and ‘Kya Se Kya Ho Gaya’ still have the same charm as they had sixty years ago when they released, the credit goes to the music master ‘Burman Da’ for his evergreen classics.

Kaagaz Ke Phool –

The 1959 romantic drama was directed and produced by ace filmmaker Guru Dutt who played the lead character in the film alongside Waheeda Rehman. The film marked a technical revolution in Indian cinematography. Though the brilliant movie carrying the magnificent buffet of musicals was not praised at first as time passed audiences seemed to like the film as they understood the depth of it. Kaifi Azmi, the legendary poet wrote most of the songs like ‘Waqt Ne Kiya Kya Haseen Sitam’ which is known for its timeless charm and being one the best Bollywood compositions Burman stole hearts like forever.

Pyaasa –

 The 1957 drama produced and directed by Guru Dutt who also stars along with Waheeda Rehman, Johny Walker, and Mala Sinha, the film is set in old Kolkata. The film getting recognition for its musical charm is no surprise, the magnificent tracks including ‘Yeh Duniya Agar Mil Bhi Jaye’, ‘Ham Aapki Aankhon Me’, ‘Jaane Who Kaise Log’ and ‘Jaane Kya Tune Kahi’ added a beautiful intensity to the film. The popular song ‘Sar Jo Tera Chakraye’ is from this film only.

 The 1955 period drama directed by Bimal Roy, adapted from Sarat Chandra Chattopaddhyay’s novel Devdas, stars multiple phenomenal actors including Dilip Kumar and Suchitra Sen playing the central characters. The film attracted attention not only for brilliant story-telling but the film also featured a mind-blowing collection of soundtracks. Mastero Burman teamed with Sahir Ludhianvi to get the finest musicals that added another layer of charm to the film. He created timeless songs like ‘Ab Aage Teri Marzi’, ‘O Aanewale Ruk Ja’, and ‘Manzil Ki Chah Mein’.

Taxi Driver –

 The 1954 romantic musical film was produced by Navketan Films, and directed by ace filmmaker Chetan Anand, featuring Dev Anand, Kalpana Kartik, Johny Walker, and Sheila Ramani. The musicals were created by S.D. Burman and lyrics were done by Sahir Ludhianvi. Burman became the second person to win the Best Music Director at Filmfare for his magnificent compositions in Taxi Driver.

Baazi –

 

The 1951 film directed by Guru Dutt, stars Dev Anand, Geeta Bali, and Kalpana Kartik. The crime thriller got its fame instantly for the captivating music composed by none other than S.D. Burman along with the path-breaking storytelling. Although the legend was a success in 1940, he was ready to leave Bollywood after being disenchanted. Later, changed his mind as he teamed up with mind-blowing filmmaker Guru Dutt, Burman created the star-studded musical buffet. ‘Tadbeer Se Bigdi Hui Taqdeer Bana Le’ which became a massive hit was an essential part of the film.

Briefly, although Sachin Dev Burman created groundbreaking musicals, he had to struggle early in his career when he was just starting with elegant melodious soundtracks, first as a singer and later as a composer. He did not care for anything but his passion for music, the legendary artist put his reputation on edge just to create magical pieces one by one. Although he faced a lot of criticism for his intuition for the experiment but refused to move from his decision and stood still and eventually all his expert strokes succeeded at the box office as well as won the hearts of millions.
