Britney revealed that she always had a complicated relationship with her father and things worsened as he took over her career and started to criticize her public appearance. She wrote, Feeling like you’re never good enough is a soul-crushing state of being for a child. He’d drummed that message into me as a girl, and even after I’d accomplished so much, he was continuing to do that to me.” “If I thought getting criticised about my body in the press was bad, it hurt even more from my own father. He repeatedly told me I looked fat and that I was going to have to do something about it.” she continued. She then explained if things were right and if she would have lived her life the way she wanted, it all would have worked out.

The Notebook’ is one of the most iconic romance movies of Hollywood which Britney gave an audition for as well. However, in the book, she revealed her relief that she was not cast in the movie alongside her Mickey Mouse Club co-star Ryan Gosling. She said, “The Notebook casting came down to me and Rachel McAdams, and even though it would have been fun to reconnect with Ryan Gosling after our time on The Mickey Mouse Club, I’m glad I didn’t do it. If I had, instead of working on my album In the Zone I’d have been acting like a 1940s heiress day and night.”

  • Abortion while in a relationship

Perhaps one of the most shocking revelations from ‘The Woman In Me’ is how Britney had to undergo a pregnancy termination while dating the member of the former boy band, NSYNC, Justin Timberlake.

While dating, the two became Hollywood’s favorite and one of the most iconic celebrity couples in the world. However, their relationship went through turmoil when Britney had to abort their child as he was not ready to be a father yet. “But Justin definitely wasn’t happy about the pregnancy. He said we weren’t ready to have a baby in our lives, that we were way too young,” she wrote. She continued, “I’m sure people will hate me for this, but I agreed not to have the baby. I don’t know if that was the right decision. I never would have done it if it had been left up to me alone. And yet Justin was so sure that he didn’t want to be a father.” “To this day, it’s one of the most agonising things I have ever experienced in my life,” Britney added.

In 2007, Britney Spears had a mental breakdown that resulted in cutting all her hair and shaving her entire head. In this memoir, she finally revealed why she really did it. She explained that she was being labeled as “erratic” and “mentally ill” by the media as she was going through a divorce from her husband and the father of her two children, Kevin Federline, which made her a constant topic of news and gossip. She wrote, “I’d been eyeballed so much growing up. I’d been looked up and down, and had people telling me what they thought of my body since I was a teenager. In the memoir, Britney recalled how she and her mother Lynne Spears, 68, bonded over alcohol. She claimed that she started drinking cocktails, Daiquiri’s with her mother as early as being an eighth grader which means she must have been the age of 13 or 14. She wrote, “For fun … my mom and I would make the two-hour drive from Kentwood to Biloxi, Mississippi, and while we were there, we would drink daiquiris.” “We called our cocktails ‘toddies’,” she added. She also explained how drinking with her mom and her father drinking alcohol were two completely different things as her father’s personality would change after he drank. Explaining this, Spears wrote, “I loved that I was able to drink with my mom every now and then.” “The way we drank was nothing like how my father did it. When he drank, he grew more depressed and shut down. We became happier, more alive and adventurous,” she added.

Britney’s mother, Lynne Spears has not commented on these claims yet.

  • The conservatorship and the feeling of a ‘child robot’

One of the most publicized and criticized matters or aspects of the global icon’s life was her conservatorship arrangement, which lasted 13 long years and was managed by her father, Jamie Spears. During this time, Jamie had full control over his daughter’s life, career as well and personal choices, controlling her financial and medical affairs too.

Writing about this experience, the ‘Toxic’ singer said that she felt like a ‘child robot’. “I became a robot. But not just a robot – a sort of child-robot. I had been so infantilised that I was losing pieces of what made me feel like myself … The woman in me was pushed down for a long time. They wanted me to be wild on-stage, the way they told me to be, and to be a robot the rest of the time,” she continued.

After a series of court hearings and a globally trending #FreeBritney movement on social media, she was released from this conservatorship. Her father, Jamie also has not commented on this memoir, or her claims yet.
