Lizzo’s attorney is firing back with a lawsuit of harassment and discrimination which was filed by a former clothing designer, who worked on the tour. The singer said that she’s nothing more than a “disgruntled” employee who was fired for ‘playing hooky’ on the day of the concert. Asha Daniels has worked on Lizzo’s Special Tour that took place earlier this year; she sued Lizzo in September.
She said that she had faced a “culture of racism and bullying” while working for Lizzo. This lawsuit follows another explosive lawsuit filed by three backup dancers who made nearly the same allegations against the pop star and her company which is ironically built on the central idea of body positivity.
However, Lizzo’s attorney Martin D. Singer said the case must be shut down immediately. The attorney offered a strongly worded statement to dismiss the dancers’ case. The singer called it a “meritless and salacious” lawsuit filed by a “disgruntled” worker who did it because she was fired within three weeks of joining.
The singer said, “During her brief employment by [Lizzo’s touring company], Plaintiff refused to comply with instructions from her supervisors and tour management, failed to perform the work that she was assigned, and, eventually, just played hooky and refused to show up for work.” She continued, “Unsurprisingly, she was terminated after abandoning her post on the day of a concert in Paris, France.”
However, if seen from a technical angle, Lizzo’s attorneys want Daniels’ case to be dismissed as it was filed in the wrong place. They said that she has no direct connection with California and so, it should not be allowed to let her sue there. The singer further wrote, “She is a New York resident who worked for a Delaware corporation in Europe,” and so, “She has alleged no nexus to California.”
In a statement on Monday, Asha Daniels’ attorneys said the motion is “yet another Hail Mary by Lizzo’s team to try to shift blame to the victims”, a trick to cover up her alleged wrongdoing. They said, “Lizzo and her lawyers can continue trying to rationalize her illegal and wretched conduct but we remain committed to seeking justice for our clients, and look forward to our day in court where Lizzo can explain her behavior in a public forum.”
Though, Lizzo’s legal team called it a “fabricated sob story”, the music industry is still shocked at the fact that an artist who advocated for body positivity is accused of body shaming and sexual harassment. The motion is currently pending.
