Selena Gomez is not just a singer, she is also an amazing actress, a fierce mental health advocate, and an inspiring philanthropist. Whether it is slaying on the red carpet, being her authentic self on social media, or dropping chart-topping music, Selena has always been an inspiration for many. So, here is another remarkable year for the queen of authenticity and being real. The singer has also never shied away from expressing her charm and strength through her music. The following four tracks are the truest examples of music that Selena has created to empower people from all around the world.

1. ‘Who Says’ – 2011

There was a time when Selena Gomez did not do solo music, she was performing with her band The Scene. On March 1st, Selena released ‘Who Says’ as a lead single from the band’s third album, ‘When the Sun Goes Down’ and quickly it became one of the most iconic songs of Selena Gomez. This is a powerful anthem for self-confidence, and moreover, self-acceptance. The lyrics encourage listeners to reject societal standards of beauty and embrace what they truly are inside. Selena sings “Who says you’re not perfect? Who says you are not worth it?” as a way to remind her fans that best comes from within.

When Priscilla Hamilton wrote the song with Emanuel Kiriakou, the producer of ‘Who Says’, the song was going to another artist and Selena Gomez had to push Disney to get the track for her album. “It’s actually a funny story: I was working with Disney at the time, and they were actually giving the song to another artist,” Gomez recalled. “And I cried—I remember, I was with my mom—because I loved the song so much. I basically said to my label, ‘I feel like my fans are young and they need it.’ That’s all I kept saying because I was 16 at the time. I was like, ‘I think my fans really need it; tell [them] my fans really need the song.’ And so maybe it just didn’t work out with the other artist, but that [getting “Who Say”] was a gift to me that I did not know I needed. “And I love, love that song, and it has carried with me through my whole career, and I fought for it. So to be honest, I, to this day, need to hear it. Not by me. Like I don’t want to hear myself sing it. I’m just saying the message will last and last because it’s the truth. It’s such a special song.”

2. ‘Kill Em with Kindness’ – 2015

If there is a picture of Grace online, it is of Selena Gomez. Her 2015 release ‘Kill Em with Kindness’ is the perfect example of how Selena oozes positivity, poise, and grace. Have you ever heard of the old phrase, “Just kill ’em with kindness”? This is what the singer focused on while making the track. As she grew up in the media, every phase of her has been scrutinized over and over again. Media has also never been kind to her, with her music, art, talent, and even her body. To put an end to this and let out a message of fighting evil with good and kindness, she released this track from her 2015 album ‘Revival’. According to the artist, one of the main inspirations behind the song was mainly the body shaming that she had to endure from social media users and tabloids when a paparazzi picture of Gomez in a bikini during a trip to Mexico in 2015. Some people pointed out that she gained weight while some suggested she fell off.

Gomez recalled, “I was getting a lot of hate for my body and ‘you’re gaining weight,’ and so I was in Mexico and I was just feeling all of this stuff and I would be lying to you if I said it didn’t kind of hurt my feelings, but I kind of channeled that into my music.” She also called the entire experience “degrading”. So “Kill EM with Kindness” is her grace and poised way to give her haters a reply.

3.‘Rare’ – 2020

Every single person in this world is rare, they are unique, and that is exactly what Selena Gomez wanted her listeners to remember. ‘Rare’ is a single from her second solo album, also titled ‘Rare’, released in 2020. The song is a testament to Gomez and the importance she places on discovering your own uniqueness. The song is the perfect example of empowerment, it is all about being independent, and now letting anybody else take advantage of you in any sense. The lyrics indicate the message of taking charge of your own uniqueness and Selena has gotten exactly that with her single.

The song opens with the lines, “Baby, you’ve been so distant from me lately / And lately don’t even want to call you ‘baby.'” The singer revealed that this comes from a point of exhaustion, where the “relationship has run its course.” In the chorus, Selena sings “Why don’t you recognize I’m so rare?” which Gomez says comes from a place of confidence and self-esteem. She recalled that this ” is a constant struggle for me.” “What I think is so important about this chorus is that it’s acknowledging” the artist is not perfect, “but I do know that I’m special.” The ‘Rare’ singer says the lyrics indicate her acknowledging that she can walk away because “there’s a someone for everybody.” Reportedly, the song was previously supposed to be sung by Madison Beer, but we are glad Selena got the track as her voice is the perfect match for the lyrics.

4.‘Lose You to Love Me’ – 2020

‘Lose You to Love Me’ is another empowering single from ‘Rare’, Selena’s last project in 2020 that earned Selena her first no .1 on the Billboard Hot 100. The song presents an emotional glimpse at the singer’s headspace for the last year. It is the stark innocence of the track that makes it so appealing and captivating. The raw honesty that the song excludes will make you feel more[powerful and confident, ready to face the world on your own. Although it is a very personal song from Selena Gomez, so many people with broken hearts and similar grief would be able to relate to it. Sure, it is a certified sad girl anthem that talks about losing the love of your life, ending a chapter, and moving on. But at the same time, it is an encouraging capsule that teaches people how to love themselves. The signature pop-up sound of the singer has been replaced with a more mature, more sophisticated ballad.

When the song was released, Selena wrote on Vevo, “This song was inspired by many things that have happened in my life since releasing my last album,” she said. “I want people to feel hope and to know you will come out the other side stronger and a better version of yourself.”
