The prolific sarod player Avra Banerjee is back again as a composer with his fusion of Indian Classical music and World music compiled in an album called ‘Memory of Melodies’.
Recently fusion music is creating a buzz among the audience and the music industry. This shows how much versatile the perception of the listeners has become. Adding fuel to this glorious fire is the profound musician Avra Banerjee’s new album ‘Memory of Melodies’ which is a compilation of 8 songs that are bound to bring back the memories of the good old times. These tracks are very close to the heart of the Indian audience as they have grown up listening to these soothing yet filled with intricate musical tapestry while tuned in to the radio. There is no home in India that does not know the sweet and homely essence of Indian Classical music.
The first track of the album is ‘Jiya Lage Na’ is an original composition composed by Avra Banerjee and sung by Ustad Rashid Khan. The prolific artist Avra Banerjee has incorporated a touch of jazz and Western music masterfully. The blend and the fusion of the different kinds of genres and styles are immaculate and definitely establish the musical maestro once again. The second track of the album is called ‘Tose Lage Nain’ which was sung by the living legend Hariharan. The song depicts the yearning of a lover who is captivated by his beloved’s soul-capturing eyes and beauty and cannot wait to see her. The slow-paced music really sets the stage for a relaxing mood. The arrangement and programming by Tamal Kanti Halder is outstanding and has done justice to the vision Avra Banerjee had in his mind while creating this masterpiece.
The third song is called ‘Harmony of Rhapsody’ which portrays the mind-bending blend of flute played by Shashank Subramaniyam, violin played by Ambi Subramaniam, bass guitar played by Bachospati Chakraborty, and music composed and designed by sarod maestro Avra Banerjee which is based on intricate time cycle of 8.5 and transitioning between 8 and 9 beat time cycles. The fourth song of the album is ‘Classically Perth’ which showcases the soul-capturing voice of Amitav Islam, the intricate tabla playing of Gurpreet Singh and Sivakumar along with the magical sarod played by Praashekh Borkar. The fifth song is called ‘Jo Tum Mile’ another one rendered by Hariharan which is like an anthem of soulful music and the unique flair of the sarod maestro has lifted the track onto a new height.
The sixth track of the album is called ‘Tujhme Fana Kar De’ which is sung by Raghab Chatterjee with of course the infusion created by the sarod maestro. The song speaks of spirituality and a higher power that can salvage the human soul. The harmonium played in the middle is commendable and the lyrics along with the hooking rhythm are hard to get out of the mind. The seventh track is called ‘Silent Embrace’ which features one of the most honest and soothing musical tapestry of Indian music, composed by Aranya Banerjee who is son of Avra Banerjee, performed by Tamal Kanti Halder on piano and Avra Banerjee on sarod. The enticing rhythm along with the melodious piano creates an enigmatic flow that sets the stage for the sarod to take up a deserving space in the track. The eighth track of the album is called ‘Saqi Nazar Se’ which shows how effortlessly bass guitar can be blended with a classical instrument like sarod. The soothing and melodic voice of Amitav Islam binds it all together to create a masterpiece.
In short, this album is a great fit for those who like to take it slow and enjoy the richness Indian Classical music has to offer but do not want to compromise their Western choices.
