The 39th annual Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction featured a night with Cher and Dua Lipa duet, a Foreigner supergroup led by Kelly Clarkson, and so on.
The celebratory night of the 39th annual Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction turned into a party that could not be missed at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse in Cleveland, Ohio, as Kool & the Gang, Dave Matthews Band, Mary J. Blige, A Tribe Called Quest and Cher showed up to accept inductions from Chuck D, Julia Roberts, Method Man, Dr. Dre, Dave Chappelle and Zendaya. The event was held in the hometown of the Rock &Roll Museum for the first time since 2021. The top music industry honor in the performer category went to Mary J. Blige, Cher, Dave Matthews Band, Foreigner, Peter Frampton, Kool & The Gang, Ozzy Osbourne, and A Tribe Called Quest. The honorees of the Musical Excellence Award included big names like the late Jimmy Buffett, MC5, Dionne Warwick, and Norman Whitfield.
But apart from the awards there were a few moments that made the night unforgettable to the audience, some of them are mentioned below:
Cher’s Change of Heart
The evening started with Dua Lipa in a long black leather dress hinged with delicate chains over fishnet stockings, belting Cher’s anthem ‘Believe’. She is then joined by Cher in leather chaps and the due joined hands while hitting the chorus of the 1998 comeback song. After Zendaya delivered Cher’s induction, she began her acceptance speech by addressing the elephant in the room. She said that it was easier for her to get two divorces than it was getting in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. In 2022 she said to Kelly Clarkson that she would never be in it even if she was offered a million dollars but Cher had a change of heart. She thanked David Geffen for taking the award to the finish line.
Dionne Warwick Calls Teyana Taylor Her ‘Alter Ego’
Teyana Taylor, who has landed the role of Dionne Warwick in an upcoming biopic, graced the stage in a look reminiscent of the star from the 1960s with a bee-hive hairdo and olive-color empire-waist tasseled gown. She said that, if was not before she got the role to play Dionne Warwick, she could finally understand deeply the depths of Warwick’s talent. She recalled ‘Don’t Make Me Over’ as the anthem for women all over the world and how she was the one to bump The Beatles off of the charts. She added that the world now needs love and another thing the world needs is more of Ms. Dionne Warwick. Warwick joined Jennifer Hudson as she sang ‘I’ll Never Love This Way Again’ and also sang ‘Walk On By’.
Common, De La Soul, Queen Latifah, and Busta Rhymes Deliver the Performance of the Night in Honor of A Tribe Called Quest
It all started when Dave Chappelle took the mic to share arguably the most moving induction of the evening. He shared with the crowd his realization and the times when he was having a rough time, how he read a Chinese proverb which roughly translates to ‘The best meal you can cook is made with ingredients that you already have’. Dave went on to say that even dreaming of being a part of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a black kid in New York in 1985 was something he could never do and that was not the main motive of A Tribe Called Quest. They just used what they were provided with and the ingredients were unforgettable friends.
Four out of the eight inductees in the performer category were on the ballot for the first time: Cher, Foreigner, Kool & the Gang, and Peter Frampton. The five-and-a-half-hour ceremony intertwined moving speeches and career highlight reels with performances that repeatedly brought the packed house to its feet. People can watch these and many more of the greatest moments of the induction as it is streaming on Disney+ and scheduled to air on January 1st on ABC.
