The event, held in the heart of New York City, showcased India’s rich heritage and the universal appeal of Diwali, the Festival of Lights, which celebrates the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil. Shannon K’s performance at Times Square honored these themes and highlighted the growing recognition and appreciation of Indian traditions across the world. ‘I feel honored to represent India on such a global stage,’ Shannon K said. Reflecting on her experience, Shannon said, ‘This was a dream come true. I had such a blast celebrating Diwali at Times Square! I’m incredibly proud to share our culture with such a diverse audience, and it’s moments like these that show how music and culture can connect us all.’ Shannon fondly remembers watching Christmas and New Year’s festivities at Times Square as a child, fascinated by the thought of performing on that stage one day. ‘The first performer I saw there was Mariah Carey,’ she recalls. ‘I used to sing along to her songs, and seeing her live was an unforgettable experience.’
Her father, renowned singer Kumar Sanu, offered his support and pride in her accomplishment. ‘My parents always taught me to work hard to achieve my dreams,’ Shannon says. ‘When I told them about this performance, they felt incredibly proud. My dad especially loved how I merged Hindi and English songs together.’ Shannon’s Times Square debut was a truly special moment for her. ‘It was overwhelming yet exhilarating,’ she shared. ‘I was nervous but enjoyed every bit of it. The crowd was amazing, and honestly, I didn’t want to leave. I wanted to keep singing and celebrate Diwali with everyone there!’ Her performance marked a chapter in Times Square’s history and a tribute to Diwali, bridging cultures and celebrating Indian heritage on a global platform.
