Spanning over two decades, Anoushka Shankar’s journey with Grammy awards has just taken a new turn. The famous Indian classical musician has gained two nominations at the 67th Grammy Awards. She got her first international recognition in 2002 at the Grammy Awards after becoming the youngest nominee and the first Indian woman to be nominated for the category of World Music. That year she was nominated for her album ‘Live At Carnegie Hall.’ Only after a few years, in 2005, the artist was again recognized by the international Grammy Awards. She became the first Indian artist to perform Grammys, solidifying her presence on the stage of global music. In 2016, her global reign continued as she showed up on stage as a presenter and performed for a second time in 2021 during a remotely-filmed lockdown Grammy broadcast.

The extremely talented Indian musician continued to break barriers when she performed for a third time at the Grammy Awards in 2023. This performance was significantly more important and highlighted because this was a collaboration between Indian and Pakistani artists. She performed on the stage with her co-performer AroojAftab for their track ‘Udhero Na.’ Both the artists were nominated in the category of Best Global Performance.

Now in 2024, her album ‘Ch II: How Dark It Is Before Dawn’ has secured two nominations at the 67th Grammy Awards and the artist is beyond grateful. Her newest album was nominated for Best New Age, and Best Ambient or Chant Album. Additionally, the artist has also been recognized for her contribution to Jacob Collier’s song ‘A Rock Somewhere,’ which secured this year’s nomination for Best Global Performance. With this year’s nominations, Anoushka has gained a total of 11 impressive Grammy nominations in total. The nominations this year certainly add to her previous nominations in the category of Best Global Music Album for her solo works. This includes ‘Rise,’ ‘Traveller,’ ‘Traces Of You,’ ‘Home,’ ‘Land Of Gold,’ ‘Love Letters PS,’ and ‘Between Us…’

Reflecting on this big success of securing nominations at the Grammys, Anoushka shared her gratitude. She said, “It’s a wonderful feeling to be Grammy-nominated again this year, and twice! I’m especially grateful that my latest album ‘Ch II: How Dark it is Before Dawn’ has been nominated, not least as it means the music I sent out into the world in hopes for peace and healing reaches even more people. I can’t help but hold my breath a little though, as I’ve been through this process before, and although I’m very fortunate to have been nominated so many times I’ve never won.”

She further added I’m wary of how the nomination that initially feels so elating can later feel less than when it doesn’t manifest a win. I’ve learned to try to stay focused on gratitude for the initial nomination and just enjoy the ride. But I’d be lying if I didn’t say I was hoping for a different outcome! I hope people are with me and I’m grateful to once again be representing India on the global stage.”

The 67th Grammy Awards will take place in Los Angeles, on February 2, 2025.
