Versatile country music singer Hadlie Jo becomes the first-ever female artist to cover the hit country track “Fire And Smoke” by none other than Earl Thomas Conley. Jo is an amazing music artist who has made some incredible progress on her musical journey even though it started recently in 2023. Bringing back the flavors of old country music; she is kind of bridging gaps of music and eras. Let’s find out what the artist has to say.
DMR: How did you come up with the idea of covering “Fire And Smoke”?
Hadlie Jo: My producer, Jimmy Melton, and I were looking for a classic country song to bring back into this day and age, and Jimmy suggested “Fire & Smoke”. It was a very popular song in country music in the 80s, and a female has never recorded a cover of it before.
DMR: When did you grow your love and passion for music?
Hadlie Jo: My dad. My daddy has always had a passion for music, but as a kid, no one ever showed interest in him and his love for it. So, I grew up around my dad playing music around our house constantly. Whenever I was 2 years old I would sit on the couch with my dad and sing children rhymes. That’s where the music passion started.
DMR: Who helped you the most to pursue your passion in the field?
Hadlie Jo: My parents and my grandmother. My mom and dad have always been so supportive of me and this dream of mine and have always done every single thing that they can to help me in my journey. My grandmother recently passed away but, she was my best friend and always giving me confidence and words of affirmation for my music career. There are so many amazing people in my life who have inspired me and helped me so far, but these three people have always been the backbone.
DMR: As a rising country singer, what difficulties do you find in the music industry?
Hadlie Jo: As a young artists a struggle is finding venues that will allow you to play as a minor. A lot of the more popular venues happen to be good ole honky tonks and bars, and most of them won’t allow you to play unless you’re 18 or 21.
DMR: Besides country, would you like to experiment with any other music genre?
Hadlie Jo: I would love to experiment with southern rock or bluegrass. I have always loved these genres, and if I had to pick a genre other than country, these would be my go-tos.
DMR: Would you like to collaborate with other artists?
Hadlie Jo: I would absolutely LOVE to collaborate with other artists. I’ve actually got a few collabs in the works right now that will be coming out later this year and in 2025!
DMR: Name some of your biggest inspirations for doing country music.
Hadlie Jo: My main inspirations are Dolly Parton, Don Williams, Patty Loveless, Emmylou Harris, and Alan Jackson. These artist have truly shaped the artist and musician that I am today.
DMR: Do you think Country music is a dying genre in competition with pop and hip-hop?
Hadlie Jo: As a classic country artist, I don’t think that Country music is a dying genre in competition with pop & hiphop, because there are so many upcoming artist who are trying to bring classic country back! A few examples are me, Zach Top, Bella Frantz, Caden Wilson, Brooklyn Fenn and so many others!
DMR: What would you like to tell to your fellow country artists who are yet to be known?
Hadlie Jo: Just keep going. Take advice and learn from other people’s mistakes, but don’t let that change who you are and are trying to be as an artist. Everybody has a story, just keep writing yours.
DMR: Please shed some light on your upcoming music projects.
Hadlie Jo: I’m currently recording new music, co-writing new songs, attending my 3rd semester in Commercial Music at South Plains College, sharping up my skills on all of my instruments, and working on some collaboration projects with Caden Wilson & Payton Riley.
DMR: Other than country, what other genres do you really enjoy?
Hadlie Jo: I really enjoy 70s Southern Rock, Bluegrass, 80s Hair-Metal, and 90s-Early 2000s HipHop. I have a wild music taste!
DMR: Would you like to share a few words for the fans?
Hadlie Jo: Thank you all so much for all of your love and support so far. Every piece of merch you have bought, every song you have listened to on streaming platforms, every time you request a song on a local radio station, every time you repost our posts on social media, and every ticket that you buy, helps us get up and down the road and planning for upcoming projects.
