Kendrick Lamar gave music listeners an early holiday present Friday with the surprise drop of a new album. The Grammy winner’s 12-track ‘GNX’ is the rapper’s first release since 2022’s ‘Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers’ and his sixth studio album overall. It also comes just months after his rap battle with Drake. Just minutes before the full release Lamar posted a teaser video for the album’s title track. ‘GNX’ came with little publicity is not much of a surprise. The description for the album on Apple Music reads simply, ‘He asked us to ‘watch the party die,’ but only so he could resurrect it.’
The 12-track ‘GNX’ has a roster of contributors including SZA, who appears on ‘Luther’ and ‘Gloria.’ Additional credited artists include Sam Dew, Roddy Ricch, Bobby Hawk, Ink, and many more. The album also features ‘Heart Pt. 6,’ the latest in his ongoing series that Drake used as the title for one of his diss tracks in the back-and-forth between the rappers earlier this year. Rumors had been circulating for months that Lamar was hard at work on a new project. Earlier this week, DJ Snake suggested that Mustard had contributed to four or five of the songs and that there was a surprise Taylor Swift appearance, though she doesn’t appear to make the project.
In his first full-length album since 2022, the’ Not Like Us’ hitmaker addressed Lil Wayne’s disappointment for not being selected to play the Super Bowl Half-Time Show next year. The Like That rapper released his latest album without any prior announcement or promotion, leaving his fans surprised. In the intro song titled ‘Wacced out Murals’, Lamar called out Wayne (born Dwayne Michael Carter Jr) for being sad after losing the Super Bowl performance to him. ‘Used to bump ‘Tha Carter III,’ I held my Rollie chain proud/ Irony, I think my hard work let Lil Wayne down,’ Lamar rapped in the song.
In the video message shared on Instagram in September, Wayne addressed his Super Bowl snub, saying, ‘I had to get strength enough to do this without breaking. I’mma say thank you to every voice, every opinion, all the care, all the love, and the support out there. Your words turned into arms and held me up when I tried to fall back.’
‘GNX’ comes before the close of a massive year for Lamar. He made headlines in the spring for his feud with Drake, releasing a string of singles including ‘Euphoria,’ ‘Meet the Grahams’ and ‘Not Like Us,’ the latter of which became the only song to make a significant impact on the charts. Earlier this month, it was announced that the song was nominated for Song of the Year and Record of the Year.
