The Weeknd is showing a bold approach to marketing by collaborating with the estate of the late artist Jean-Michel Basquiat for an album cover that is intriguing and rebellious. The latest The Weeknd X Basquiat collection is already creating a buzz among the fans.
The new collection will feature vinyl, autographed CDs, merch T-shirts, and the album. The Weeknd said that it was his privilege to be a part of this project. This limited edition collection offers exclusive merch such as Basquiat’s personal sketchbook which was drawn when he was 17 years old.
The intriguing cover shows a man who is hanging onto a balloon and floating over a group of figures and buildings. The group of figures is explained as the “working class heroes” and the structures behind them are mentioned as “unfinished buildings.” Right above the buildings, one can see it is written, “upon leaving the ‘norm.’” The picture is quite intriguing and offers a social-political structure while having a personal take on it.
According to the press release, the image itself “speaks to the album” and recalls the memories of The Weeknd’s House of Balloons era. This amazing collection is all set to release on January 24 and fans are eagerly waiting. They can also pre-order the collection online.
Jean-Michel Basquiat is one of the prominent figures in the New York Art scene who inspired a lot of people and has been well-connected with the music industry. One of his paintings sold for a record-breaking $110.5 million in 2017 which is one of the most expensive artworks around the world.
It is evident, that The Weeknd X Basquiat collection is surely bringing back the blended energy of pop and art world that speaks of people.
