Zakir Hussain has been part of the Indian music industry for more than six decades. In this huge career span, the artist has contributed endlessly to the industry. It can be said that he took Indian classical music to another level and mesmerized both national and international music enthusiasts. Music has been an integral part of Hussain from a very early age. In an interview, he said his father chose to whisper rhythms in his ear instead of prayer after he was born. He then even said ‘My mother was very upset and said, ‘Why are you doing this?’. And then his father stated ‘Because this is my prayer’.

In his prosperous music career, he has earned many awards from Padma Shri to Grammys. His spectacular journey is truly inspiring for everyone. In 1988, he got his first Padma Shri. In 1990 he was honored with the SangeetNatakAkademi Award. In the same year, he got the Indo-American Award for uniting the United States and India with his musical approach. After that, he got a Grammy for Best World Music Album. Then his work was recognized as the Best World Beat Album and NARM Indie Best Seller Award. It was ‘Planet Drum’ that led him to achieve the awards.

In 1999, Hussain received an award from the United States National Endowment for the Arts’s National Heritage Fellowship. Later, in 2002 he won Padma Bhushan, in 2009 a Grammy for the World Music Album category, in 2023 Padma Vibhushan for his excellent contribution and lastly, in 2024, he became the very first Indian artist to get three Grammys in a single evening. A long time ago he said ‘We were all on the same wavelength, the same quest, looking for perfection, which we will never find. But that didn’t matter because it’s all about the journey — not the goal’, which can be said absolutely true by looking at his fine career.
