The Oscars’ Best Original Song shortlist is out and songs made by Pharrell, John Elton, and Lainey Wilson have made it to the list. Pharrell’s ‘Piece by Piece’, the title track from the animated film Lego biopic has made the cut. The list also includes Elton John’s ‘Never Too Late’, seen in his recent documentary. This song is co-written by Brandi Carlile. This year is hopeful for Lainey Wilson too as ‘Out of Oklahoma’, co-written with Luke Dick and Shane McAnally for the album Twisters has also made it to the list.

The Oscar’s Best Original Song shortlist also included two songs from Emilia Pérez, ‘El Mal’ and ‘Mi Comino’. Both of these tracks have also been nominated for Best Original Song at the Golden Globes recently. The two tracks were written by the film’s core musical team, Clément Ducol and Camille, and writer-director Jacque Audiard also contributed to ‘El Mal’.

A total of 15 tracks were shortlisted for the Oscar Best Original Song and the list includes ‘Compress/Repress’ by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross from Challengers, ‘Forbidden Road’ by Robbie Williams for the upcoming biopic Better Man, and ‘Tell Me It’s You’ by Lin-Manuel Miranda from Mufasa. The seasoned Oscar hopeful Diane Warren is running once again for the award this year and his ‘The Journey’ from Tyler Perry’s new WWII drama, The Six Triple Eight has been shortlisted as well. Warren has already been nominated in the same category 15 times. Although the musician has never won a competitive Oscar, she received an Honorary Award in 2022.

Another exciting song that made it to the shortlist was ‘Sick in the Head’ by the eminent Belfast rap trio Kneecap from their slightly fictionalized biopic. Kristen Wiig snuck onto the list with ‘Harper and Will Go West’, which she co-wrote for Will Ferrell and Harper Steele’s doc, Will and Harper. Maren Morris was another exhilarating name on the list who was shortlisted as a co-writer on the ‘Kiss the Sky’ from The Wild Robot.

Not just Best Original Song, but the Oscars has released several shortlists today including Best International Film, Documentary, Animated and Live Action Best Makeup, Visual Effects, and Sound. The full Oscars shortlist for Best Original Song is below.
