British singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran is currently in Bengaluru ahead of his most-awaited +-=÷x 2025 India Tour. The whole nation is excited to see the singer perform his upcoming show in the country. But ahead of his performance in Bengaluru, a viral video of the police interrupting the singer’s street performance on Sunday got widespread attention on social media.
On Sunday on Bengaluru’s Church Street, Ed Sheeran started a live performance but was soon halted by the Bengaluru police. Sheeran’s team stated that they had prior permission and insisted the act was brief. However, the authorities denied stating that the permission was requested but not granted. In the viral clip, Ed was seen starting his performance on the street enthusiastically. He started with his chartbuster hit ‘Shape of You’. However, only a minute into his performance the police step in and disconnect the cables as the singer stands and watches.
This unexpected moment led many people on social media to believe it was an impromptu act. Now, addressing this confusion, Ed took to his Instagram stories and clarified what had happened. He wrote, “We had permission to busk btw, hence us playing in that exact spot, was planned out before, it wasn’t just us randomly turning up. All good though. See ya at the show tonight x.” He further expressed his excitement about performing ‘Night 2’ at the show at NICE Grounds in Bengaluru.

Upon the viral video on social media, many took the sides of the authorities while others supported Sheeran stating the incident was “embarrassing”. DCP Central Bengaluru, Shekar T. Tekkannanavar stepped ahead to clarify why the performance was stopped. He clarified that Chetan, a member of the organizing team approached him for a street performance but it was denied. The rejection happened because Church Street is a high-traffic area and as per a high court order, several evacuations had already been carried out there. Since there was no permission, Sheeran was also asked to vacate the place.
Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara also gave a public statement regarding this incident. He said, “No, we have permitted him to perform in the International Exhibition Centre but all of a sudden, he started performing at Church Street… He is a very famous singer, naturally, there will be a lot of people and there will be chaos… Police prevented it. Nothing beyond that.”
Despite this hiccup, the Grammy-winning artist continues to win the hearts of Indian music lovers. He is currently here for his ‘The Mathematics Tour’ and performed in Bengaluru on Sunday. The ‘Perfect’ singer has already performed in Pune, Hyderabad, and Chennai.
