Lady Gaga is unarguably one of the most popular and greatest pop stars of this generation. Throughout her career, Gaga has given several hits, including ‘Poker Face’, ‘Bad Romance’, etc. However, Gaga recently opened up about the struggles she faced during the early stages of her career. In a recent interview with the Sunday Times, the songstress revealed the struggles she had to endure in her career and how the fame has impacted her life.

“I’m just a much more stable, healthy human than I was for the last 20 years,” Lady Gaga mentioned. The 14-time Grammy winner released her first debut album, The Fame’ in 2008, at the age of 22. “The music industry took over my life when I was younger,” she said. “It took me far away from myself and I had to endure a lot and it hardened me, for sure. It took me a while to find my feet.” While remembering the challenges she faced in her early career, Gaga recalls, “I’ve been criticised for being the weird one, or different.” “Since the start of my career I’ve been asked, ‘What’s your style? How can we define you? ’And my earliest music was definable as me. But soon it’s viewed as a machine and a business.” “Well, my music has always been under my control. Since I was 17 I never allowed anyone to control that.” “But then you’re surrounded by systems figuring out how to monetise and market you, to turn you into an enterprise,” she concluded.
In the same interview, Gaga went back to her sonic roots. She said, “[The Fame] came out of the culture of people that I was living with at the time. I was surrounded by musicians, photographers, club promoters, people that lived and breathed art. It was a community of support, and one of the reasons I was afraid was I was so far away now from that community. It also felt like maybe I would just be recycling something that I had done before. But ultimately I decided that I really wanted to do it and that this style and aesthetic really did belong to me.”
Gaga also talked about how she was “bridled to think about women in music”. She commented, “When I moved to Hollywood and was playing my music for Interscope for the first time, they had conversations about, what’s your look going to be? And you’re thinking, It’s going to be me. How are you going to dress? Well, I’m going to wear what I usually wear when I’m onstage. They introduce you to start thinking about it as a business as opposed to a performance.”

Going further into the interview, Gaga talked about making art while being happy and its importance. She expressed, “People say artists make their best work when we’re tortured, but, I would really like to do away with that. I think I’ve made some of my best work [with MAYHEM], and I’m happy and healthy because I have all my faculties as a musician. I think that romanticizing sick artists perpetuates this thing that’s supernegative, especially for women. I want women to feel like they can be healthy and be happy, that we will celebrate them in their health.”
Lady Gaga‘s latest album, ‘Mayhem, follows ‘Chromatica’ (2020) and ‘Harlequin’ (2024). The record blends influences from ’90s alternative, electro-grunge, Prince and Bowie-inspired melodies, gritty guitar work, funky bass lines, French electronic dance, and analog synths. So far, three singles have been released; ‘Die With A Smile’ featuring Bruno Mars, ‘Disease’, and ‘Abracadabra’.
