The 67th Grammy Awards has been a great success for emerging rap queen Doechii who won the award for the best rap album. When Kendrick Lamar said that sister is the strongest in the game right now, he was not lying. Doechii has become an inspirational person for everyone not only for her amazing hip-hop skills but also for her resilience and perseverance. She started from losing her job and then became a Grammy Winner with her determination. Whether it is her commitment to sobriety or being honest about herself from the beginning, she is an inspirational woman, a music artist, and a black person who is an example of true talent and a will that cannot be broken.

The 26-year-old rapper made history by becoming the third-ever female hip-hop artist to win the honor for Best Rap Album at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards for her mixtape project, “Alligator Bites Never Heal.” Jaylah Hickmon, better known as Doechii got emotional during her acceptance speech and said, “I put my heart and my soul into this mixtape. I bared my life. I went through so much.” She further added, “I dedicated myself to sobriety, and God told me that I would be rewarded, and that he would show me just how good it could get.”

The fans of Doechii have never left her side and they celebrated her win by resurfacing an old video from 2020 just to let people know how far she has come with nothing but her raw talents and unwavering personality that fears none. In the video, the viewers can notice young Doechii’s struggle, heartbreak, and resilience after losing her job. In the video, she says, “So I got fired today,” and then declares, “Either way, Imma be straight.” With almost no support, the artist said, “I think tomorrow I’m just gonna go to a whole bunch of studios and ask if they have any internships open,” and added, “At this point, I have nothing to lose.” With her fearless dedication, she soon gathered attention from Anthony “Moosa” Tiffith Jr. who is currently the president of Top Dawg Entertainment (TDE). TDE is best known for supporting the powerhouse artists like SZA and Kendrick Lamar. They helped the rapper move to Los Angeles and she embarked on her musical career in 2022.

‘Alligator Bites Never Heal’ is her debut album project is a reflection of her life and it feels highly relatable to the listeners as well. The song named “Denial is a River” offers a detailed battle of her addiction, depression, heartbreak, and everything that helped her get stronger and get stardom this quickly. This win is not just about her but millions of youth who are struggling like she used to. Surely, the rapper still can have many struggles in life but not getting success is not one of them. Doechii also said, “I know that there is some Black girl out there, so many Black women out there that are watching me right now, and I want to tell you: You can do it. Anything is possible.”

The hip-hop artist is well aware of the current music industry where black artists are gaining much success but there are still many barriers that need to be removed. While there is already prevailing discrimination in the industry, Donald Trump’s immigration policy and unkindness towards black people could be an igniter. The rapper said, “Don’t allow anybody to project any stereotypes on you that tell you that you can’t be here—that you’re too dark, that you’re not smart enough, that you’re too dramatic or too loud,” and further added, “You are exactly who you need to be, to be right where you are, and I am a testimony.” With her powerful words and persona, the rapper received a standing ovation from all and the night proved that there is more to life than just Grammy. It is about believing in yourself and finding your true potential in a world that might not believe in you at first.
