The 2023 Americana Honors & Awards took place on 20th September, Wednesday at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. This year, Tyler Childers’ ‘Can I Take My Hounds to Heaven’ has bagged the award of album of the year. Previously, this album was at No. 3 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums and at No. 8 on the Billboard 200 chart. From the very beginning, this album has gotten a lot of appreciation from the listeners and now it is named as the best album of the year 2023.
In this album, there are three discs and each of them has eight diverse gospel songs. The three versions of the discs are known as ‘Hallelujah’, ‘Jubilee’, and ‘Joyful Noise’. In ‘Hallelujah’ there are songs recorded in the live studio, in ‘Jubilee’ there are incorporated horn and string sections, and in ‘Joyful Noise’ there are remixes and samplings. Each version of the album is very different, which has made it even more attractive for the listeners.
Apart from this, there are many artists who have won awards on the Americana Honors & Awards. This year Bonnie Raitt’s song ‘Just Like That’ became Song of the year, Billy Strings got the award for Entertainer of the year. On the other hand, The War and Treaty won the duo/group of the year for the second time. In addition to that, S. G. Goodman won the award for the best emerging act, and SistaStrings (sisters Chauntee and Monique Ross) won the award for instrumentalist of the year award. The Avett Brothers and Nickel Creek have also gotten the Trailblazer Awards.
Other than all these, Patty Griffin got the Lifetime Achievement Award for songwriting, which was presented by Sarah Silverman. Not only that, but Allison Russell received the award for Spirit of Americana / Free Speech in Music Award. Russell received the award from First Amendment Center’s John Seignthaler and Democratic lawmakers Gloria Johnson, Justin Jones and Justin Pearson.
This year in the 2023 Americana Honors & Awards Bettye LaVette won the award of Legacy of Americana Awards in the partnership with National Museum of African American Music. This award was presented by Noelle Taylor and Steve Jordan. This time audiences got to see Buddy Miller who was the 2022 Lifetime Achievement Award receiver now returned as the music director of the Americana All-Star Band. In this, he has featured Jim Hoke, Brady Blade, Fred Eltringham, Jen Gunderman, Catherine Popper, Larry Campbell and The McCrary Sisters.
In the 2023 Americana Honors & Awards, Logan Ledger started the show with a posthumous tribute to the profound rock artist Jimmy Buffet with a brilliant performance of ‘Come Monday’, which was released in 1974. Along with that, another tribute was given to Robbie Robertson with the 1969 majorly hit song ‘Up on Cripple Creek’.
Some other phenomenal performances of the show were Adeem the Artist, Sunny War, Bettye LaVette, Allison Russell, Angel Olsen, The Avett Brothers, Bonnie Raitt, Brandi Carlile, Hermanos Gutiérrez, Brandy Clark, The War and Treaty and William Prince, Margo Price, Nickel Creek, 49 Winchester, Patty Griffin, S.G. Goodman. On this show, there were celebrations of two albums that have completed their 50th anniversary. The albums are ‘Closing Time’ by Tom Waits and ‘There Goes Rhymin’ Simon’ by Paul Simon.
