The year 2022 has been a boon to Bollywood when it comes to the music industry. The Bollywood music scenario has received a magnificent facelift, churning out some of the greatest chartbusters, which include a mix of soulful melodies and hip-swaying grooves. Be it Brahmāstra’s catchy hooks or Jug Jugg Jeeyo’s colorful beats, each song has showcased an array of talents and versatility, and listeners have given their verdict on them in the form of streams and views. Below are the top ten hits songs of 2022, which includes artists like Arijit Singh, Jubin Nautiyal, Neeti Mohan and so more:

10/10

‘Aafat’ from Liger

Sung by Zahrah S. Khan and Tanishk Bagchi, ‘Aafat’ has managed to hit a jackpot among listeners with its catchy verses and the scenic beauty of the mesmerizing Atlantic beaches of the southwestern corner of Portugal. The song has been a favorite dance number since its release and has got millions shaking to the beats of its rhythms. However, within a few days of its release, the makers of the song also received severe criticism for the incorporation of sexually violent scenarios in the lyrics. People called out the makers for this insensitivity and sexism.

9/10

‘Tur Kalleyan’ from Laal Singh Chaddha

A beautiful number from a movie that had the most shocking box office numbers became a flop because of the content quality that did not appeal to the people and also the immense boycott movement against it. Laal Singh Chaddha saw Aamir Khan hitting the silver screens after 4 years, but failed to yield the expected results. However, the songs went on to be massive hits. ‘Tur Kalleyan’ which literally means “to walk alone” is an anthem celebrating the beauty of letting go. It is a tribute to embarking on a fresh journey of self-love and as the video pans across the lengths and breaths of the country, it captures the essence of the beauty of transcending all material appeals and walking alone.

8/10

‘Jehda Nasha’ from An Action Hero

An Action Hero received immense love for Ayushmann Khurrana’s acting but at the same time, he received a massive backlash for the recreation of the popular song by Delhi-based band Faridkot. But Khurrana defended this saying that the remake gave the song the visibility that it has been lacking by helping it reach the masses. The music video featured Khurrana with Nora Fatehi and has over 60 million views on Youtube. A stunning performance by both the stars, the song received a lot of appreciation and became one of the top 10 songs of the year.

7/10

‘Nacho Nacho’ from RRR

SS Rajamouli’s masterpiece RRR instantly became a favorite dance number with its unmatchable energy and Jr NTR and Ram Charan showed off their skills as masters of dance in the video. The original Telegu version of the song ‘Naatu Naatu’ has been shortlisted for the 95th Oscars in the Best Original Song category. The song received an immense outpour of love, and it provided some engaging BTS shots of the sets as well. Keeping pace with the Telegu version, the Hindi version has also created a wave on reels and videos all over the world, as people shook their legs to this fun number.

6/10

Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 Title Track

Recreated by – Tanishk Bagchi, the Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 (Title Track) voiced by Neeraj Shridhar became a party favorite. This peppy dance number starring Kartik Aaryan got listeners grooving and brought forth a wave of nostalgia as the title track from Akshay Kumar’s Bhool Bhulaiyaa had almost developed something of a cult following. However, the song has also received its fair share of backlash. As the original track had already been an upbeat song, a lot of people found it unnecessary to make a remix out of it. Also, in the original track, Akshay Kumar was seen to have dressed in sync with his character from the movie, but in the remix, Kartik Aryan was criticized for remaining detached from his movie character.

5/10

‘Meri Jaan’ from Gangubai Kathiawadi

Neeti Mohan lends her voice to one of the greatest songs of the year that paid a tribute to the Indian retro-music era. Slipping seamlessly into the role of Gangubai, Alia Bhatt won hearts and proved her versatility as an actress. But what entranced the audience was the music. Each track went on to occupy a position in everyone’s playlist, but ‘Meri Jaan’ definitely stole the show. The innate vintage vibes that the song gives out, along with the shots in a retro car with a mischievous play of passion between Alia and Shantanu Maheshwari make the song a delight to watch and listen to.

4/10

‘Doobey’ from Gehraiyaan

Everyone waited with bated breath as Deepika Padukone made her OTT release debut Gehraiyaan. ‘Doobey’ sung by Lothika Jha became an instant hit with its laid-back, chill party vibes, and was a song about the engulfing and dreamy feeling of the first phase of falling in love with someone without worrying too much about the consequences. Though the movie received mixed reviews for the plot and storyline, the songs went on to be chartbusters, with ‘Doobey’ taking the lead.

3/10

‘Manike’ from Thank God

‘Manika Mage Hithe’ was a 2021 song sung by Sri Lankan singer Yohani that became an internet sensation. Fast forward to 2022, Yohani made her Hindi debut, remaking the song with Jubin Nautiyal. The Hindi version, ‘Manike’, was featured in the movie Thank God. The mesmerizing dance moves of Nora Fatehi and the appealing chemistry between her and Sidharth Malhotra won the song a huge fan following and people took to creating their own dance covers of the song on social media.

2/10

‘RangiSari’ from JugJugg Jeeyo

Sung by the vocalists of the original track ‘Rangi Saari’, Kanishk Seth, and Kavita Seth, ‘RangiSari’ had set the stage on fire, receiving almost 86 million views on YouTube. Keeping the soul of the original track alive, the remix does not alter much of it and has entranced listeners with the musicality. The insane chemistry between Varun Dhawan and Kiara Advani won the hearts of viewers as they showed off their amazing dance skills. In spite of facing backlash for remixing a beloved song, it was a consolation for listeners that not too much of the track was changed.

1/10

‘Kesariya’ from Brahmāstra

Fans went wild when the teaser for the song first dropped in April. Sung by Arijit Singh, and penned by Amitabh Bhattacharya, with Pritam’s composition, the song was predicted to be the greatest love anthem of the year. Starring Alia Bhatt and Ranbir Kapoor, it gained massive popularity and went viral all over social media, and built ample anticipation about the couple’s first on-screen work together. When the full track was released, there were immensely mixed reactions over the ‘love storiyaan’ part of the song, which many felt was not at par with the spirit of the track, while others claimed plagiarism in the tune. But in spite of all criticisms, the song emerged as one of the greatest hits of the year and there is no denying the brilliance of it.

Thus, in spite of being top hits, most of the songs came under severe scrutiny, but in the end, did what they were meant to – entertain. Though these are the few that made it to the top ten, several songs have been released too recently to make it to this year’s chartbusters yet but they do sound promising and provide hope for the future of Bollywood music.
