A story of an unyielding spirit
Neha Kakkar was born into a Punjabi family in Uttarakhand, Rishikesh. Neha is younger than Bollywood playback singer SonuKakkar, and singer-composer Tony Kakkar. Neha’s story of being one of the most celebrated Indian playback singers of now is not just a story of talent but of perseverance. She belonged to a humble family where her father RishikeshKakkar used to sell samosas outside of a college and her mother Niti was a homemaker. The entire family of 5 people used to live in a single rented room. Despite the Kakkar family’s financial struggles in day-to-day life, the family was rich in one resource and that was music. The sibling’s musical talent was recognized by the parents and they encouraged the children to move forward with their passion for music.
Jagrata period
Neha along with her family moved to Mumbai in the early 90s to try her luck at singing. At that time the entire family was going through probably their most difficult financial times. In the hope of contributing to her family, Neha started performing at devotional gatherings, also known as jagratas, at just the tender age of 4. She along with her siblings Sonu and Tony would perform religious songs and bhajans to help their father make ends meet. She later recalled that she used to earn Rs. 50 per jagrata.
The big break
In 2004, Neha moved to Mumbai with her brother Tony and just two years later she auditioned for the second season of ‘Indian Idol’. Although she did not win the show, her talent and dynamic performances brought her limelight, especially being the youngest contestant. The turning point in her career was when she released her debut album ‘I’m a Rockstar’. Composed by Meet Bros, it was the album’s success that opened the doors of Bollywood to Neha Kakkar.
Bollywood glamour
Neha Kakkar’s first big Bollywood breakthrough happened with Cocktail in 2012 where she voiced ‘Second Hand Jawaani’. The massive popularity of the song further cemented her place in the industry as a playback singer. This led to her singing for various hits like ‘Sunny Sunny‘ from ‘Yaariyan’, ‘London Thumakda‘ from ‘Queen’, ‘Dilbar’ from ‘SathyamevaJayathe’, ‘Kala Chashma’ from ‘BaarBaarDekho’, and many more.
