Even though the whole world knows this legendary figure mainly because of his singing skills, he was also a talented actor, lyricist, writer, director, producer, and screenwriter. His debut in the acting industry was with the movie Shikari (1946) where he played along with his brother Ashok Kumar. The ionic singer may be famously known by the name Kishor Kumar but his birth name was Abhas Kumar Ganguly who was born in Khandwa, which is now in Madhya Pradesh.

It was under SD Burman, that Kishor got the guidance and inspiration to find his calling in the music scene and he created his unique style. Assisted by SD Burman, Kishor Kumar picked up yodeling from American singer Jimmie Rodgers and Tex Morton, the New Zealand and Australian country music great. Later under junior RD Burman, Kishor Kumar continued his musical journey. This development led to Kishor Kumar being the voice of great actor Dev Anand from 1950s to 1970s. Under SD Burman, he sang most of Rajesh Khanna’s best songs which count up to 245 songs.

Kishor Kumar was asked to sing for an Indian National Congress rally in Mumbai during the time of the Emergency which he refused to do. This led to a ban on his songs by the national broadcasters, All India Radio and Doordarshan from 1976 till the end of Emergency.

This legendary singer was married four times throughout his life. Firstly, he was married to Ruma Guha Thakurta (1950-1958), then he got married to Madhubala (1960-1969) for which he converted to Islam and changed his name to Karim Abdul. Thirdly, he was married to actor Yogeeta Bali in 1976 and got divorced in 1978. Lastly, he married Leena Chandravarkar in 1980 and they were together till his death. One fact from when he got separated from Yogeeta is that Kishor had stopped singing for Mithun chakraborty after Yogeeta got married to him after leaving Kishor Kumar.

  • One quite interesting fact about the legend is that he could sing in female vocals too. In the film Ake SeedhilagiDil Pe, he was heard to be singing female vocals as well.
