History
“Music is a world within itself. It’s a language we all understand.” -Stevie Wonder
World Music Day or Fête de la musique (in French) was first celebrated in 1982 in Paris. Back then, the day of the summer solstice was chosen by Jack Lang and Maurice Fleuret to celebrate this word event which was quickly followed by other countries like the United States, Russia, the UK, India, Italy, Greece, Ecuador, Mexico, Canada, Australia, Peru, Brazil, and many others. Jack was the Minister of Culture back then and Maurice is well renowned for his musical compositions who became the Director of Music and Dance. The goal of this event was never to embrace the music of a particular region or genre, but to celebrate the diversity and rich cultural essence of world music.
Significance
“Without music, life would be a mistake.” – Friedrich Nietzsche
It is true that many people, whether a musician or not; consider music to an integral part of life. It is not about being professionally trained or being a bathroom-singer, rather it’s a feeling of escape that helps to deal with life. Pure love for melodies, words, and creativity helps to connect all the listeners and music artists across the globe. Music is an element of daily and what other day would be better than World Music Day to cherish it.
Purpose
“Music is everybody’s possession. It’s only publishers who think that people own it.” -John Lennon
Back then Fête de la Musique was made to promote music in a more personal and approachable to the listeners by making a revolution. Firstly, it provides exposure as numerous emerging music artists perform on the streets, live gigs, and free concerts and reaches a huge number of listeners. Secondly, on this day, music is celebrated with true love and passion for it regardless of making business. It is intentionally made to make music free of cost to let everyone have a taste of it. Despite having some obstacles on the way, World Music Day is still the biggest celebration for all.
This Year’s Celebration
“One good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain.” -Bob Marley
Due to the Global Pandemic, this year’s celebration will have to go through strict restrictions and most of the performances will take place virtually. It will be focused on live streaming and web-platform-based performances, interaction, and promotion. In this time of social distancing, World Music Day is bringing everyone closer.
