Rock music lovers and rock concerts are the most explosive combination when it comes to the celebration of music. The new year has started and many rock concerts will be taking place this year as well. While celebrating the genre and ‘G.O.A.T’s of the music industry; let’s look back to those rock concerts that proved rock music to be the most uniting musical genre of all time. Woodstock 1969 is one of the most iconic and energetic music festivals of all time just like Bryan Adam’s ‘Summer of 69’. Let’s not forget ‘60s America was highly dominated by racial issues, student protests, and the Vietnam war. And Music was the only medium to raise voice and rock become an integral part of a cultural movement. Woodstock’s 1969 rock concert was the epitome of fashion, art, and music as well as the bohemian way of life. Rock legends of that era namely, Jimi Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane, Joan Baez, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and many other rock bands as well as artists have performed in it. Voodoo Child, Canned Heat, Carlos Santana, and many others have taken the concert to a whole new level.

When the Soviet Union was no more, Moscow became the epitome of the celebration. Brian Johnson said, “The government negotiated with the students, the kids, that as part of the settlement, they were going to get a rock concert.” The stage at Tushino airfield in Moscow was holding a lot of energy with heavy-weight performances from legendary rock bands like AC/DC, Pantera, Metallica, The Black Crowes, E.S.T (Russian heavy metal band), and many others. It was one of the biggest rock concerts of all time with more than 1.6 million attendees. The Russian Military has been acting as the security for the event. Metallica stole the show with their electrifying performance of ‘Enter Sandman’.

Everybody knows how to find the ‘Stairway to Heaven’ as Led Zepplin paved the way. In the ‘70s Zeppelin was in its prime and Robert Plant and guitarist Jimmy Page established that again and again. Madison Square Garden is one the most famous venues around the world and Led Zep performed three fully sold-out shows at MSG in the year 1973. Some of the other tracks by the band like ‘Achilles Last Stand’, ‘No Quarter’, ‘Rock and Roll’, etc also became the rock anthems of the year.

There is no summer bummer when it comes to the rock band, U2. The band headlined two shows at Slane Castle in the same summer of 2001. While the first show took place after Bono’s father’s death, the second show took place on the day when Ireland won against the Netherlands. U2’s performance was legendary and the passionate version of their ‘Sunday Bloody Sunday’ won everyone’s heart. A strong crowd of 80,000 people was present at the events to absorb the rock energy.

The Beatles stayed at the top of the rock n roll hall of fame for many years and there were many concerts that are significantly notable. However, the Apple Corp rooftop concert was the most iconic of all time. It was the last public appearance by the band where all the core members performed together. They played a continuous set of 42 minutes on the top of their London Office where the Police has to arrive to reduce the volume. The footage of the concert can be seen in their 1970 documentary ‘Let it Be’.

2013 was the biggest ice-breaker year for Metallica as the band performed in all seven continents and yes that includes Antarctica too. It is not new that Metallica is well revered for performing at some of the most iconic venues but voyaging to the bottom of the world for music is something many brave men couldn’t do. They set their voyage from South America and offered the chills of the south pole through their performance.

It was quite unfortunate when the music and rock industry lost Freddie Mercury who died from AIDS but his band Queen did not fail to pay their tribute. A Tribute Concert in 1992 has been arranged in tribute to Freddie which had a goal to raise charities for people suffering from AIDs. It is one of the biggest and most emotional concerts in history where Guns N Roses, Metallica, Bob Geldof, U2, Def Leppard, Spinal Tap, and many others performed sets. Legends like Elton John, David Bowie, and Robert Plant also performed with the Queen. ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ with Axl Rose and Elton John is still buzzing through the hearts of rock music lovers.

Some other notable mentions would be Live Aid 1985, Thin Lizzy at Slane Castle 1981, Bruce Springsteen at Capitol Theatre 1978, etc to name some. Th era of rock n roll made it clear that is going to stay, even if not the same venues but in the hearts of listeners.
