musicians as well. Before these artists like Taylor Swift or Beyoncé became household names, their mothers were their biggest champions. And today these global icons honor their humble beginnings by being the biggest fans of their mothers. Various musicians have been ardent fans of their mothers and honor their existence in their lives through everything, from dedicated social media posts to sharing stages. One recent example of this would be Lizzo who has been very vocal about her mother’s support and its importance. John Legend also shared his gratitude and always praised his mother for encouraging him to sing in school and church. Taylor Swift wrote a song in tribute to her mother for her career journey.
So this Mother’s Day let’s honor musicians who celebrated their mothers in the most remarkable way!
1. Tupac Shakur
Tupac Shakur, one of the biggest and most influential rappers, celebrated his mother in his resonant single ‘Dear Mama’. In the single, he praises his mother Afeni Shakur as a “Black queen” and ends the track by letting her know “You are appreciated.” His mother’s story is as fascinating as her son’s. While Afeni was pregnant with Shakur she was sentenced to 350 years of jail time on charges of being related to the Black Panther Party. She did not give up but acted as her own attorney in court. After serving 11 months in jail and fighting her own case, Afeni gave birth as a free woman. Later in life she inspired and supported Tupac in his creative journey. Tupac’s music and entire legacy are themed around freedom, something that he learned from his mother. This inspired singles like ‘Changes’, and ‘Keep Ya Head Up’. “My mother taught me to analyze society and not be quiet,” said the late rapper about their relationship in a FX docuseries.
2. Christina Aguilera
Christina Aguilera became a known face when she took part in ‘Mickey Mouse Club’. It was her mother Shelly Loraine Kearns who took her to singing auditions at just the age of 7 years. Yet her childhood was far from perfect. In the music written in her adulthood, the artist shared stories about her mother’s strength and their shared experience of domestic abuse at the hands of her father. “I watched my mom have to be submissive, watch her Ps and Qs or she’s gonna get beat up,” Aguilera recalled in an interview with Paper Magazine. Upon asking what kind of a woman she wants to be, she says, “You can either be, unfortunately, so damaged by it that you take a turn for the worse, or you can feel empowered by it and make choices to never go down that route.” Christina has released several songs dedicated to her mother and her survivorship such as ‘Oh, Mother’, and ‘I’m OK’.
3. WILLOW
WILLOW is a budding singer who has always been in the limelight for being born to such talented celebrities, as Will and Jada Smith. In recent years, the singer paid homage to her mother Jada Pinkett Smith, especially for Mother’s Day. After a sentimental video tribute, WILLOW planned a surprise performance of Jada’s former metal band, Wicked Wisdom, with the former bandmates. Throughout her childhood, WILLOW has seen her mother perform on stage and in real life with wonder. “I was my mom’s biggest fan. Every night, I wanted to ride on the security guard’s shoulders and watch her perform. She was a rock star, and I was living for Wicked Wisdom,” WILLOW said. “I felt like it was only right for me to pay homage to a time in her life because she showed me what womaning up really is about.”
4. Billie Eilish
Billie Eilish is one of the most recognizable artists in the current music industry and has one of the most recognizable families as well. This includes her brother and collaborator FINNEAS and their mother Maggie Baird. She has always been present in Billie’s life, has appeared in multiple Eilish interviews, and documentaries, and even travels with her daughter on tour often. The mother-and-daughter duo share a passion for vegan activism and also won plenty of awards for their environmental efforts. But most importantly, Eilish credits her mother for saving her when she was feeling suicidal and going through a tough time. Eilish said that her mother regularly checked on her and even gave her permission to take a needed break from the world stage at any given moment. In a recent birthday post, Billie said “You make the world go round. I told you yesterday that when I think about how much I love you, I want to sob and throw up” on her caption.
