According to the leaked advertisement, the festival is set to commence on June 12 and will go on till August 14 with many superstars gearing up to rock the stage.
San Francisco’s renowned Stern Grove festival unveiled its program in an unusual style just weeks after confirming it would return for its 85th season, surprising some music fans during their morning commute.
Muni passengers were among the first to view the lineup of musicians for the free outdoor concert series, which was advertised on Friday afternoon. On June 12, rapper Too $hort and Oakland funk band Tower of Power are set to kick things off. The lineup continues with chillwave favorites Toro y Mori and Hello Yello, alt-rock veteran Liz Phair and Madi Diaz, as well as the Cold War Kids and Geographer from San Francisco.
Old Crow Medicine Show and Molly Tuttle, singer-songwriter Cat Power and Oakland’s Spelling, as well as country-pop musician LeAnn Rimes and Amythyst Kiah, will round out the festival later in July. On 31 July, the San Francisco Symphony will perform, followed by Taj Mahal and Monophonics, before Phil Lesh & Friends and Midnight North round out the season on August 14 with an annual Big Picnic fundraiser.
The news of the Stern Grove lineup spread quickly, with photographs of the bus ad being posted on Twitter and receiving hundreds of upvotes on the San Francisco subreddit, with some users declaring it to be a “better lineup [than] Outside Lands.”
The organizers of the stern Grove festival announced their widely awaited comeback earlier this month. Last August, a ruptured main water break flooded the outdoor amphitheater, which was flanked by a magnificent backdrop of eucalyptus and redwood trees, closing the final show and shutting the Sunset District grove to the public for the foreseeable future.
A PR from the festival read, “Although the Grove experienced extensive damage last fall due to a major water main rupture and while all renovations are not yet complete, the site has now been approved for in-person audiences again this summer.”
Admission remains free, and as in previous years, audiences can make reservations on a first-come, first-served basis by visiting Stern Grove’s website 12 days before each concert.
The festival tweeted on Saturday afternoon, “Floods and leaks aside, things are going swimmingly over here. Stay tuned for our full official lineup announcement on May 3!”
