Rapper, singer, and versatile music artist Doja Cat has proved her excellence once with a subtle, powerful, and dark-embracing performance on the 2nd day of the ‘Scarlet’ Tour.
Bringing up the heat before the fall, Doja Cat has just offered her most enticing live performance through the ‘Scarlet’ Tour. The musical gig took place at L.A.’s Crypto.com Arena Thursday night and it was quite a powerful event, at least the screams of the concert-goers confirmed that. It was only the second date of the tour and Doja made sure that the audience felt like it was the last one. With the theme of red and black, the ‘Scarlet’ tour’s second date was quite thematic and a perfect gift for her fans on this spooktacular season of Halloween. This special musical tour by Doja is something music lovers have been waiting for a long time and finally, it has begun!
The show in Los Angeles was kind of confusing at the beginning as the Title cards appearing on the big screens revealed that there would be a total of five acts in the show namely, Act I, Act II, Act III, Act IV, and Act V. It took a while for the fans to understand whether these chapters would come in with consecutive costume changes and production changes. But Doja Cat made an exception by sticking to her red era only. The show was around an hour and a half long and Doja kept it subtle, energetic, and ‘Scarlet’ just like the tour name suggests. It’s red but there is darkness in it. It is also the title of her latest album released in September. Perhaps, it is her current favorite album as the hue and the setlist suggest. There were a total of 15 songs performed from ‘Scarlet’ in the tour out of the 17 songs that the album consists of. The other five tracks were taken from other musical projects “Planet Her,” two from “Hot Pink” and one from “Amala.”
Making an emphasis on the latest released project through a musical tour is a pretty daring move by Doja as most of the music artists tend to perform earlier tracks the most which have already much attention from the fans and have been buzzing their ears for a while now. But Cat knows how to make a difference and she does that gracefully. Similarly, while others seem to change their outfits and stage design often in a live performance; Doja performed the whole act in a skin-tight bodysuit that’s a stylized representation of a body’s crimson internal musculature along with a black jacket, a drip that holds the dark ambiance. While it might be a little weird for some concertgoers to buy tickets for such a show that comes with very little changes; perhaps nobody regretted it as the Crypto.com Arena was houseful on Thursday night.
Doja possesses a mesmerizing personality that remains unfazed on stage. She offered a great deal of physically expressive movement with her eclectic blend of rap and R&B singing. Being savvy and visually compelling, Doja only focused on her talents and skills of rapping, singing, and stage presence that does not require too many variations. She picked up the right mood that goes with the theme, the tour, and her latest album; and also stuck to it for the rest of the show. While Swift’s, Beyonce’s, and Madonna’s tours exhibit dynamic and maximalism; Doja’s show offered minimalism and cold comfort. Churning out the real essence of Halloween; this tour offered much viscerally captivating elements and a literal sense as well.
No matter how much Doja Cat makes fun of her fans on social media, this show was quite vibey and offered e few moments of interaction with the artist as well. There was a moment when Doja asked the audience to turn off the lights on their phones but as usual, they did the opposite as apparently; there is a trend to create wavy starlight with phone flashlights for the concertgoers. To this Doja said, “I said, ‘Lights off,’ but that’s OK,” and the singer had a good laugh along with the crowd. It is only normal to wish for more of such moments but when it comes to Doja; it is more like a be-careful-what-you-wish-for situation. The collaborators and organizers have done a great job in emphasizing the theme with overhead film shots, great sound arrangement, and a huge arachnid prop that hovers overhead without reminding you of Spider-man. You would obviously enjoy the performances of the “Demons”, but perhaps you do not want them to stay for too long.
