Bon Iver, Florence and the machine, Sampa the Great, and many other hit headliners along with a blizzard of feathers; Womadelaide 2023 offered the most eventful week.
After three long years, the long-awaited Womadelaide festival finally took place and a record number of audiences participated in the program. After years of cyclical rescheduling and postponement, finally, Billy Bragg’s Womadelaide 2023 happened and offered a week-long euphoric musical experience for all. Bragg said, “It’s been a long time coming, these shows,” and also, “Those tickets had 2020 printed on them.” Featuring a blockbuster line-up with Bon Iver, Florence and the machine, Kronos Quartet, Youssou N’Dour, and Béla Fleck; this fest started with a full flight ahead.
With perfect weather throughout the week and an endless sea of adoring fans, Womadelaide 2023 was shining bright with some of the most ecstatic performances. The gig took place in Botanic Park which is a famous place for picnics and get-togethers. Although there were long queues at the food stalls and toilets, there were no complaints as the audience enjoyed their hearts out. Earlier, the spark has been dimmed for Australian festivals with cancellations and postpones due to the pandemic and following events. However, Womadelaide ignited it again and now making the organizers work at full throttle.
Other than the big names, the festival has introduced music lovers to some of the best-emerging artists and bands in the global music industry. South Korea’s ADG7 (Ak Dan Gwang Chil) deserves a special mention who embraced traditional Korean musical essence with folk reclamation and spiritual art pop. Similarly, every night was special with Place des Anges by the French troupe Gratte Ciel, a group of Ariel performers and acrobats who soared over the crowd and showered fake snow blizzards. Sampa the Great also captivated the crowd with her Zambian flavors who also performed earlier. London-based singer Beckah Amani also took over the crowd even though it is her first time appearing at such a huge festival. Ukrainian-Canadian act Balaklava Blues offered an ample dose of solidarity and empowerment through Marichka and her two bandmates’ united effort. Marczyk further explained, “Every time we sing these songs, it is not only an act of resistance, but it is also an act of existence.”
It does not require to say that Womadelaide 2023 has proved the power of art and festivals to observe the diversity and bridge them together. This Australian music festival has been the most influential and dynamic experience music lovers ever had.
