DMR: Hello Mr. Charlie Cartel, it is such a pleasure to meet you. In such a brief amount of time, you have garnered so much attention from all the music enthusiasts. How do you feel about your achievements?
Charlie Cartel: “ I’m grateful for the attention the song has been getting. I’m proud of what I’ve been able to achieve knowing that things haven’t been so easy & you have to start somewhere. I’ve learned not to be so hard on myself and gave myself some credit for coming this far.”
DMR: Your latest song ‘Dreamin’ which you have released on Slap, it is getting a lot of appreciation but people are eagerly waiting for it to be released on the other major music streaming platforms. Do you want to say something about that?
Charlie Cartel: “ So I’ve put my single on Slap for individuals to see the potential of what this song can be & where it can go. The official release date for my song is June 3rd to be on all streaming platforms and I’m excited for it!”
DMR: How did you come up with this track?
Charlie Cartel: “At the time I had been dating someone who had encouraged me to get in my creative zone a lot when it comes to producing. It felt like I’ve somewhat neglected that side of my creativity for a while but I’ve always continued writing new material. A lot was happening in a positive way, I’ve gotten a new job and I love it! So right after my shift was over I came home and was listening to some music by one of my favorite artist Chris Brown. That itself inspired me to open up my laptop and started working on the beat for this song. The writing process was easy because of the mood I was already in, I was happy and excited for what was happening for me so immediately I knew this was going to be a feel good song and that’s what I was aiming for. I would normally try to write to a regular R&B beat but this time I wanted to incorporate some reggae sounds. So once the writing was finished I recorded the song from my laptop and what you’ve guys heard is the finished product.”
DMR: What has influenced you to become a singer?
Charlie Cartel: “I come from a musically inclined family fortunately, my father is a producer and musician and my mother is a songwriter and used to sing to me and my siblings when we were children. Luckily I grew up having a sense of what music is supposed to sound like and I just fell in love with the idea of singing because I had the ear for it. Over time I just continued to practice without a vocal coach and taught myself forming my own style.”
DMR: Who do you admire the most?
Charlie Cartel: “I admire my grandfather who happens to be a jazz musician himself, he played the saxophone and guitar. He passed away before he got the chance to know that I was an artist but I know he’d be proud of what I’ve become.”
DMR: When did you decide that you want to become a musician?
Charlie Cartel: “Even though I started at about 7 years old, I grew up the shy and quiet guy so I wasn’t sure, but my first year of college back in 2011 I’ve met an incredible crowd of people who helped me realize it was okay to be myself so I kept pushing to be an even better singer and by to time I had all the confidence in 2013 that’s when becoming a musician happened because I was a better version of myself that I was satisfied with.”
DMR: How do you manage to handle everything on your own?
Charlie Cartel: “It’s not such an easy task all the time but to maintain things and keep things organized I take a lot of notes and write down my plans in order. I do that so I can stay at a certain level of focus and execute my goals at the speed that I want to.”
DMR: Are thinking about experimenting with your upcoming projects?
Charlie Cartel: “Absolutely! I have such an appreciation for all types of music so to be able to incorporate new elements and try new styles is a blessing. I definitely do not want to limit myself and one thing that I do love about being creative is being able to have variety of styles and techniques when putting music together so I’m always up to delivering something new that’ll catch someone eyes.”
DMR: Are you working on something currently?
Charlie Cartel: “ Yes I’m currently working on a couple of singles for this year!”
DMR: How would you describe your musical journey?
Charlie Cartel: “I would say it’s been beautiful & interesting, being on a musical journey has its ups & downs but all in all I’m grateful to experience all that I have. The process is a huge part that has to be accepted by you if you truly want it.”
DMR: Any advice you want to give to all the aspiring artists?
Charlie Cartel: “My advice is continue to be want you want to be, do exactly what you love, do not compete with anybody other than yourself in order for you to be the best version of you & don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do something.”
DMR: Any message you want to give to your friends?
Charlie Cartel: “I love you guys back home, I believe in you. Continue to be great and work hard.
