DailyMusicRoll: What was the initial drive in your life that made you take the plunge in the musical arena?
Clane Matthew: The initial reason that made me get into music was the well being of my family. I didn’t find out I was musically inclined until I came to the states in 2008, and after that, I started to learn and improve on my gift. I became fascinated and fell in love with music and vowed to use it for the benefit of my family and to also spread awareness, positivity, and knowledge to the people around the globe.
DMR: Did you get inspired by any iconic legends when you are very young or you started on your own?
Clane Matthew: Yes! When I was growing up in Jamaica, Eminem was my favorite rapper. I used to listen to him a lot and his flow and wordplay were out of this world. After coming to the states and I began working on my art I used his skill as a reference to start my career.
DMR: Is there anyone from the music industry whom you idol worship? Can you tell us the name of the musician?
Clane Matthew: Kendrick Lamar, is my favorite artist of all time! His lyricism, wordplay, flow, creativity, and energy are unparalleled! He’s my idol and I pray one day I can collaborate with him. After I discovered Kendrick back in the day, I never looked at my music the same way again. He’s impacted me tremendously in the direction I decided to take my music. He made me think about what life really is and if my music was making a change to the people who listen, and for that, I’m forever grateful!
DMR: Do you have any plans when you start off to collaborate with a young artist and are any one of the artists are talented to make it big shortly?
Clane Matthew: I don’t really have any plans honestly. I don’t collaborate that much. I’m really picky when it comes to my art, and I don’t let just anyone get on my work with me. It sounds mean and arrogant but it’s not. I’m very defensive about how my music is done and how it sounds. I’m a perfectionist at heart so that’s why I tend to do few features. The amount of features I’ve done I can count on one hand and those artists are really great and talented. But I hope to be more open-minded and less defensive as my career progresses.
DMR: Which role of yours excites you the most? Is it the role of a singer or when you dish out other stuff?
Clane Matthew: Although all of my roles excite me, rather it’s label CEO, or singer, or rapper, the one that excites me the most is the producer. I started out making instrumentals and beats before ever beginning to sing or rap. The joy and excitement you get when you lay something down on the track is an inexplicable moment. It’s a feeling of euphoria for me because I look back at where I came from and I wouldn’t even think I would be where I am today. The feeling you get when the instruments come together and create perfect harmony is an unimaginable feeling. You just have to experience it to know.
DMR: Do you cherish the zeal associated with creativity more than any kind of material success or is it the other way round?
Clane Matthew: I appreciate talent and creativity over anything else. Nowadays everybody thinks they’re good at music and they have no talent, no creativity whatsoever. They slap autotune on their vocals and think it’s automatically good, and sadly the music industry made artists think like this. They create and promote these horrible songs that lack creativity and passion and then it causes other upcoming artists to do the same thing, and before you know it, the whole music landscape is filled with copycats; and after that, you have to dig through the mess to actually find one that’s actually good and talented. I appreciate everyone who has the creativity and talent who works hard to make themselves known. It’s a long process and you may get recognized later than the rest, but your legacy, once you make it, will last longer.
DMR: Who among your contemporaries is your biggest rival in terms of creativity according to you?
Clane Matthew: I don’t rival with other artists. I support and lift them up. If I see places where improvement is needed, I’ll suggest it and hopefully, they take the advice. I’m not here to tear down others who are trying to make it. If we keep fighting each other we have less of a chance of winning. If an artist tries to have a rivalry with me, they’re wasting their time because I’m not biting. I have better and more important tasks ahead of me that I need to focus on, and a rivalry is irrelevant to me. I can care less about what you say or what you think. I’ll keep doing me and you keep doing you. That’s it.
DMR: Who is the best rapper according to you in the present moment who can give everyone a run for their money?
Clane Matthew: Kendrick Lamar! Again his lyricism, wordplay, and flow are unmatched!
DMR: Do you regret anything in life? If any, given a chance, do you want to reverse it?
Clane Matthew: I don’t regret anything. I believe everything we face is necessary for us to be where we are. Without the things that happened in my life, I wouldn’t be the person I am today: caring, loving, and creative. Our experiences are set by God to build and mold us into better people, and I wouldn’t change my life if I had the opportunity.
DMR: What are your take on the hip hop industry and its functioning? Is it moving ahead in the right direction according to you?
Clane Matthew: The hip hop industry is more based on hits that contains vanity. The public, mostly the youth, wants songs they can get hype to while listening; so that’s where everything that makes good music gets tossed to the side. I feel the industry should go back to making good music a priority. It’ll give more room for better artists to be recognized. But as of right now I don’t see that happening.
DMR: How are you dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic? Can you tell us a bit about your experience of the dreaded situation created by the virus?
Clane Matthew: While other artists might have gotten hit hard, I actually excelled during the virus. Because I’m my own producer and engineer, I can still put out the same amount of music as I like. I also got more time to master my craft and to also start my record label. The virus and quarantine gave me time to organize myself and come out stronger and better than I ever have in the past 22 years of my life. Even though the virus is plaguing the world, 2020 is the best year of my life. I’ve been recognized more on the global scale, I’ve started a record label with countless international artists that have signed, and I also had the opportunity to tour other countries and perform my music and work with other engineers and producers. It’s been a blessing in disguise.
DMR: Being a very aware person does the present tumultuous political scenario in the world bothers you and finds a place in your music?
Clane Matthew: Yes it does. It really bothers me. It always finds a way in my music. Sometimes it may not even be political. It can be social as well, things that people tend to sweep under the carpet because they feel uncomfortable talking about it. And that’s what I’m here for: to bring those issues back to the light and make a change towards those issues. After I drop part two of my album, I’m gonna get back to doing music that involves those issues.
