DMR. Hello, Ms. Mahoggany Blu. It is an absolute pleasure to be able to pick your brain for this interview. First of all, congratulations on the successful release of “BankRoll$”. How are you feeling about it?
Mahoggany Blu: Thank you so much for having me, it’s awesome to be here with you.
I’m feeling great about BankRoll$, it’s a good vibe type of track. It embraces positive relationships which has become so rare. I wanted the ladies to know that good men do exist.
DMR. Can you tell our readers about the events/people that served as the prime inspiration behind the conception of the idea for the project?
Mahoggany Blu: My inspiration for BankRoll$ was that there are so many negative depictions of black men in the media, I wanted to show them in a positive image.
DMR. You are a natural when it comes to working before the camera. Could you share with our readers your experience of performing in front of the camera for the first time?
Mahoggany Blu: My very 1st video was off the chain, “Room 21” produced by MBeats in 2017. My team rented out the entire club for the night, we were in Hollywood so you know it was lit! Everyone showed up ready to work which made it a success! I was really pleased with the visuals.
DMR. What was the most enticing and memorable aspect of working on “BankRoll$”, and what were some of the challenges that you had to overcome during the process?
Mahoggany Blu: Shooting the video for BankRoll$ was the biggest challenge. We drove out to Las Vegas to shoot! The weather was horrible, it was108 degrees! We ended up making some last minute changes. The jacuzzi scene was not planned however it was the most refreshing. We were all hot and sweaty yet we still managed to complete the video. DMR. When did you first find your calling in the music industry and who was your greatest motivator?
Mahoggany Blu: I began singing in the church choir when I was young, I believe like 5 years old. My auntie Rosie would always make sure I always had the mic, she was determined to break my shyness. I’ve always been motivated by music that has a message, music that comes from the heart. Whitney Houston, Anita Baker, Mary J Blige and Luther Vandross have always been my favs!
DMR. What is the greatest challenge to overcome when it comes to starting as a newbie in the music industry, and do you have any word of advice for them that you yourself learned from the experience?
Mahoggany Blu: The biggest challenge is becoming apart of someone else’s beef because of Association! Being blacklisted because of unknown quarrels.
I’d say stay in your own lane Be consistent and never give up, be motivated by the naysayers!
DMR. You were greatly inspired by the works of artists like TuPac, Mary J Blige, and Jada Kiss Nipsey Hussle. Could you tell provide the readers with a peek into what appealed to you the most about their music?
Mahoggany Blu: You can hear the pain in their music, for me, that makes it authentic and raw. That is my type of artist, never afraid to say what’s going on, things that people can relate to!
DMR. When it comes to your music, what are some of the major milestones that you wish to achieve in the near future and what are some of the things that you want your listeners to take back from your creations?
Mahoggany Blu: I would love to perform at the Grammys, that is a huge milestone for every artist and I would definitely be honored.
DMR. Your music is an innovative and creative mix of an array of genres including hip-hop and RnB. What are some of the factors that were instrumental in developing this distinct style?
Mahoggany Blu: Before I begin writing, I like to create a vibe! Usually the emotions I’m feeling at the time helps me transcribe into words! If it’s love then that’s what you’ll get, if you pissed me off you might just become Blus poster child! In a loving way though, Lol..however be original! most of my music comes from my personal experiences, I either lived it or witnessed what I write about.
DMR. When you first entered the industry what was the greatest iconoclastic experience for you and did you ever develop a pet peeve about the entertainment industry?
Mahoggany Blu: I really enjoy rocking sets with the DJs and fans! It’s a unbelievable high. My most favored show was opening up for Mozzy and OG Greedo in Orange County CA, it was a whole vibe! I got a chance to share VIP sections with Mozzy, his team was like 200 thick!
DMR. Your new project “Fallen” is a tribute to the fathers of the world and speaks volumes about the pain of losing your own father. Could you elaborate a bit about what made you decide to work on the song?
Mahoggany Blu: My new track ” Fallen ” which is scheduled to be released on my birthday September 4, 2023. I was so anxious to deliver this track, I made it in honor of my late father Terry L. Phillips Sr. He was a singer as well! I watched him perform old school music all my life, from weddings to family gatherings, my dad could entertain! He would tear the roof off all the juke joints in Hattiesburg Mississippi. My pops was known for his amazing voice!
DMR. Could you provide the readers a sneak peek into your upcoming projects, including “Issa Wrap”?
Mahoggany Blu: Yes, i was recently asked to be apart of the soundtrack for the upcoming movie of Latasha Harlins story, for me it meant everything! I’ve always been passionate about civil rights, my mother taught me at an early age how to speak out against injustices. Latasha was a young girl like myself at the time of her demise, she didn’t deserve to lose her life!
