DMR: What made you decide to jump into the music industry or music business?

Domax: I just loved playing guitar when I was younger and I knew that this is what I wanted to do all the time as some form of a job. When was around 16-17 years old everyone around was talking about university and I just wasn’t up for putting years into something I wasn’t that interested in. I decide to leave school at 17 and move to London to pursue my career as a professional musician. So I guess I ended up jumping into it early to give myself a bit of a head start. I studied in London for a few years but had to make money from music to be able to exist and keep pushing for what I wanted to achieve. I’ve spent the majority of my time in London trying to be a professional guitar player but In recent years I’ve decided to move more towards being an artist and be true to myself about exactly what I want to do and make the music I want to make. There is very little guitar involved in Domax all the tunes are written and played on my Monopoly synthesizer.

DMR: What do you think makes you stand out from all the other aspiring and upcoming artists in your genre of music?

Domax: I love a lot of different music and It did take me a while to get my sound focused. I love to dance and electronic music but I also love melodies and great songwriting. I guess What makes my music stand out is the fusion of dance and electronic energy mixed with live drums and based on short punchy melodic tunes. I listen to more pure electronic and dance music at the moment and I’d love to make some new tracks in this vein but I don’t want to lose the sound I’ve created. I want my live set to work in a lot of different places from raves and clubs to intimate jazz clubs and more acoustic meditative settings.

DMR: If you could collaborate with ANY artist/band… Who would you choose and why?

Domax: I’d love to work with John Frusciante he’s the reason I first picked up a guitar and got started on all this. He’s written some amazing tunes and I love his melodic approach. He also makes some killer electronic stuff and it would ultimately be nostalgic as fuck!. Next to him, my other choices would be (in no particular order) Apex twin/Kraftwerk/Daniel Lanois – these guys are massive beasts I’d love to see how they do what they do.

DMR: What do you think is your biggest Advantage and your biggest Disadvantage about being an Indie artist?

Domax: In my opinion, the biggest advantage is you can make whatever art you want when you want with who you want. You are also in complete control of what happens with your music and you own 100% of your masters. I’d say the biggest disadvantage is not having access to the same budget/ funding and promotional reach that an artist on a major label has. Even though this stuff is great I do know people that have not had great experiences working with major labels.

DMR: Do you prefer the Independent route or would you rather sign with a major record label, and why?

Domax: As of now I like being independent I just want to keep my head down and create my own scene organically. Who knows what the future will bring – I’d never knock down an opportunity to get my music out to a wider audience if that meant singing a deal with a major record label. I set up my own record label with my studio and writing partner Andrew Kremer – “Jam international”. Since April 2022 we’ve put out 7 releases on the label and have more lined up for 2023. We just want to make some noise and create our own thing.

DMR: Out of all the songs you’ve released, what do you think is your Best song and why?

Domax: Daimyo is the best song I’ve released to date. This is on the first EP I released “Polygon EP”. It’s such a strong melody and there’s the right amount of movement, energy, and interesting stuff that goes through the whole tune. When I write a new tune I always try to create a better version of this song. This isn’t anything to do with plays or follows its purely my opinion about the writing and melodic information in this tune.

DMR: Do you miss the era of CD sales OR do you prefer the new wave of music streaming? Explain…

Domax: I remember buying CDs when I was younger streaming did not exist back then. I used to love owning CDs and I’d really listen to each album all the way through. Something about spending £12.99 on an album really made you appreciate it more and you almost did your research before you bought it. I would have loved to be able to access as much music as you can now back then for free but I just don’t think you make the same connection with the stuff you stream. I mean it would be great for independent artists if CD sales were really a thing again because the amount companies pay per stream is a piss take – but those days are long gone.

DMR: Between creating in the studio OR performing live on stage, which is your most enjoyable one and why?

Domax: I really love being in the studio the whole process of writing a tune finishing the mix and listening to the master is a great sense of achievement.  I’m in the process of setting up a live show as a duo I’m sure I’ll be into this but I really love creating in the studio.

DMR: During your entire journey through the music business, what would you consider your Worst experience?

Domax: I mean I’ve played a lot of gigs and not all of them are amazing gigs due to different things. I wouldn’t say there’s a single worst thing but playing a gig that isn’t happening for whatever reason due to a dodgy drummer/dick head promoter’s lack of organization is usually pretty bad. After that doing a gig and not being paid on time and having to constantly chase people up can be a downer. Musicians definitely get taken for a ride with this stuff!

DMR: What would you consider your most successful or proudest moment in your music career, so far?

Domax: As an artist releasing all this music and setting up this live show I’m really happy with what we’ve done and where it’s going. As a guitarist, my two proudest moments were playing a great gig with Sister Sledge at Cross The Tracks festival as the sun was setting over thousands of people dancing their arses off and selling out a gig at Pizza express Soho playing my own music with my old band.

DMR: If any, what discourages you the most about the music industry these days?

Domax: The obsession with social media and the importance it now has. I get why people chase this stuff but it seems like everyone’s attention span is has gone down to a 15-second clip on Tik Tok. The focus just seems to be on having successful Instagram reels instead of making and releasing music. The standard of musician and ability is so high and it’s really impressive but I just don’t hear finished interesting pieces of music in these 15-second clips. Playlists and algorithms exist and they do what they do and can really help get your music out to a bigger audience – but it feels like more people are making music to fit these algorithms and playlists now I just don’t like how much its influenced the artistry. I think It’s really short-sighted and the focus seems to be on becoming an overnight viral Instagram musician superstar. But then again maybe this is just where things are at and it’s a bit of necessary evil to reach new people and it’s not really going to do any harm.

DMR: What inspires you the most about the music industry these days?

Domax: There are some great communities coming through putting out some really fresh stuff. I love what Leaving records is doing they are keeping it real. There’s always space for something new and an audience to listen to it.

DMR: If you weren’t in the music business or industry, what do you think you would be doing with your life instead?

Domax: Haha I have no idea I don’t think I’d be able to do anything else

DMR: In your own opinion, What is the current music scene like in your local area?

Domax: Theres a really strong scene in London and a lot of great musicians here. I do think there’s a lot of hype around certain genres and artists and a bit of a lack of originality though. I always love seeing people coming out with something different in this scene – but I don’t think it’s always accepted as well as what’s currently “In” and “happening”. Saying that anyone who’s putting themselves out there and doing their own music is doing a good thing and more people need to be encouraged to do it. I do love that you can always find a space to make something work in London if it’s an Afrobeat night or a Punk night or a full-on Techno thing there’s always a spot that’s up for it. There are a lot of people here that listen to a lot of different music its one big melting pot. One of my favorite artists to come out of London in recent years is Wulu there’s a proper community behind what he’s doing and it’s really original.

DMR: What is your latest release and where fans can find it?

Domax: My latest Release is the “New Moon” EP out now and available on all streaming platforms and Bandcamp.

DMR: What is on your agenda or what can fans expect to see from you in 2023?

Domax: I’m going to make some dance music and a full album with some kind of quartet with me on guitar. Set up my own night somewhere, do loads of gigs, and get on some festivals. I just want to put out as much music as I can over the next few years and create my own scene around my sound.
