The Way

DMR: Please take our most genuine appreciation for your latest Would you like to share about this album ‘The Way’?

Kung Pao: Thank you so much! ‘The Way’ is a special project for me. It’s a Pluggnb/R&B influenced album that combines hard-hitting beats with smooth melodies. Working with Datkidmixx, Junio, and Jiyu brought incredible energy to the tracks. This album is about healing and finding solace through music. Datkidmixx even sampled the Bible in some of the tracks to give it a deeper, spiritual layer. I believe music has the power to heal, and I hope listeners can feel that through this album.

DMR: You are making a great impact on many people, but what has ignited your passion for music?

Kung Pao: Thank you! My passion for music began early. I was in the school orchestra, playing violin and viola, including a bluegrass section. I also pushed for the school orchestra to perform Viva La Vida – Coldplay, and composed my own sheet music as well. At 12, I started producing digital music on Audiotool, and by 15, I was DJing at Chicago juke parties and recording myself. My experience as an Olympic soccer player taught me discipline and a competitive spirit, which I brought into my music. Staying up all night making beats was my way of channeling that drive. Music became a powerful outlet, allowing me to connect deeply with others and share my journey.

DMR: For your career and other reasons you have shifted to various places, has these shifts impacted your career in any way?

Kung Pao: Absolutely, moving has had a significant impact on my career. Relocating to Miami was a major turning point. I went there to immerse myself in the top Latin music industry and to study at the Abbey Road Institute. Pursuing a diploma in music production and sound engineering under the guidance of the maestro Julio Reyes Copello and director Robin Reumers was transformative, inspirational, and challenging. It expanded my musical horizons and refined my production skills. Each move has brought new experiences and influences, shaping my sound and career in unique ways.

DMR: From your music catalog, which one is your favorite number by far?

Kung Pao: My favorite new track by far would have to be the unreleased ‘Danger – Kung Pao.’ It’s a dynamic and exhilarating piece that really captures the essence of what I love about music, and is swagged out. From its infectious beat to its witty lyrics and energetic vibe, ‘Danger’ is a song that I’m incredibly proud of. It represents a perfect blend of creativity, passion, and innovation, making it a standout in my catalog.

DMR: If you are given a chance to work with anybody from the music industry, which artist would you choose for that collaboration?

Kung Pao: If I were to collaborate with anyone from the music industry, I’d be thrilled to work with someone who shares a similar creative vision and passion for pushing the boundaries of music. Lyricists like Kendrick Lamar, a singer like Billie Eilish, or super producer Pharrell Williams come to mind, as they are known for their innovative approaches to music and their ability to create groundbreaking sounds that resonate with audiences worldwide.

Collaborating with any of these artists would be an incredible opportunity to explore new musical territories and create something truly special together.

Being a proponent of underground music scenes in cities like Chicago and Miami is incredibly important to me. These cities have rich musical histories and vibrant communities that often don’t receive as much mainstream attention as they deserve. By championing underground artists and scenes in these cities, we can help shine a spotlight on the diverse range of talent and creativity that exists beyond the mainstream.

In Chicago, for example, the underground music scene has been an environment for groundbreaking genres like house, techno, and hip-hop. From iconic venues like The Warehouse to DIY spaces and underground clubs, Chicago has always been a hub for musical experimentation and innovation. Supporting the underground scene in Chicago means supporting artists who are pushing boundaries and shaping the future of music.

Similarly, Miami’s underground music scene is a melting pot of influences from Latin, Caribbean, and electronic music traditions. From intimate clubs to outdoor festivals, Miami offers a diverse array of musical experiences for both artists and audiences. By embracing the underground music scene in Miami, we celebrate cultural diversity and foster connections between artists and communities.

As a proponent of underground music scenes in Chicago and Miami, I strive to amplify the voices of emerging artists, promote inclusive and accessible spaces for music, and foster a sense of community and collaboration within each scene. By doing so, we can help ensure that these cities continue to be incubators for creativity and innovation in the music industry.

DMR: Share something related to music when you were young.

Kung Pao: My mom sang the lyrics “Beautiful music makes me happy”, she was the first person I ever recorded. In the end, the DJ mix with my mama singing would not only be a testament to her creativity but also the spark of joy and inspiration that my first collaboration brought into my life.

DMR: Kung Pao is a very fascinating name, does this name have any special memories to it?

Kung Pao: Absolutely! The name “Kung Pao” holds a special significance for me because it was a nickname I received on the soccer field. It’s not just a name; it’s a symbol of camaraderie, teamwork, and the thrill of competition. Every time I hear the name “Kung Pao,” it brings back memories of my time on the field, the bonds I formed with my teammates, and the exhilarating moments of victory and defeat. Naming a track after my soccer nickname is a way of honoring those memories and infusing the music with the same passion and energy that I felt on the field. If you were to boil it down, ‘Kung’ means honorable and Paolo or Pao, my name means small or humble.

DMR: You have worked with many artists and you are working on several projects, what is going to be your upcoming release?

Kung Pao: Our upcoming release is something we’re incredibly excited about, and while I can’t divulge all the details just yet, I’m thrilled to share that we have a brand new track on the horizon! It’s called “Por De Tras,” and it’s a collaboration with the talented fellow Guatemalan artist AllThatVal. This track is a fusion of our unique musical styles and influences, and we can’t wait to unveil it to the world. Keep an eye out for “Por De Tras” as it makes its radio debut in Miami—it’s going to be something truly special!

DMR: In your journey of music, what has been the most challenging part?

Kung Pao: In my journey of music, one of the most challenging aspects can be navigating the ever-changing landscape of the industry itself. From staying relevant in an increasingly competitive market to adapting to new technologies and trends, musicians often face numerous hurdles along the way.

Additionally, honing one’s craft and finding a unique voice amidst a sea of talent can be daunting. It requires dedication, perseverance, and a willingness to push past setbacks and failures.

Furthermore, balancing the creative aspects of music with the business side of the industry can pose its own set of challenges. From managing finances and booking gigs to promoting your music and building a fanbase, producers often wear many hats and must juggle multiple responsibilities simultaneously.

Despite these challenges, the journey of music is also incredibly rewarding. It’s about finding joy in the process, connecting with others through shared experiences, and ultimately, sharing your passion with the world. And while the road may be filled with twists and turns, each obstacle presents an opportunity for growth and learning, ultimately making the journey all the more fulfilling.

DMR: What is the most played number from ‘The Way’?

Kung Pao: The most played number from my album release is currently ‘Her Voice’ by Kung Pao, Jiyu, and Mixxmasterr aka DatKiddMixx. It’s been a hit with listeners, and I’m thrilled by the positive response it’s received. The combination of my dynamic production and drums, Jiyu’s mesmerizing melodies, and Mixxmasterr’s skillful mixing and vibes creates a track that resonates with audiences on a deep level. It’s a true testament to the power of collaboration and creativity in music I believe.
