Sean Slick is rising and is growing to be a force in the Hip Hop scene taking his story of a millennial Londoner into a wider audience. Influenced by a handful of Hip Hop Legends such as 2pac and Biggie and he continues to show his versatility on different production and sharing his point of view with conceptual songs and unique style videos. Here’s the conversation in full.
1. What drew you to the music industry?
Ans. As a young kid I always loved music and art. There’s beauty in art and I especially love poetry. The music industry is one of the biggest industries in the world and in my genre of Hip Hop music there’s a need to succeed, music is something I enjoy to create and I love to be in a industry where I can express myself fully.
2. Who are you inspired by?
Ans. My main influences of Hip Hop music are 2pac, Biggie, Nas, Big L and Big Pun. Through each of these artists I learned stuff about Hip Hop. Being a Hip Hop artist from London I had to study the roots of Hip Hop from the beginning and with an artist like 2pac, I learnt to put your all into art, passion, subject matter and lyrics. With Biggie I learnt how to flow, this became my main attribute and with Nas it was concepts and storytelling. I used to get comparisons to Nas, Big L and Pun early on because I used multisyllablic rhyming and punchlines. Now I’ve released 3 projects I can say my sound is mine and I’m as versatile as ever.
3. Please explain your creative process behind ‘Joyride’ ?
Ans. Okay so Joyride was initially created back in August 2017 right on the heels of the release of my debut release EP Rap Scene Menace. My long time producer EliBeats sent me the beat and I knew straight away how the track would go. I started thinking of various concepts to rap about. I always put down the flow and I just let it come naturally; the drama of fake friends, jealousy was a big topic to go deep on and as the beat was so hypnotic it was just a ride of emotions, A Joyride. And then in October of 2017 it all came full circle and was eventually released.
4. What’s an average day like for you?
Ans. An average day is promoting, marketing music as I’m currently independent, checking stats, feedback and continuing to make new music, whether writing new tracks, finding beats, setting up music videos or looking to perform.
5. Is there a hidden meaning in any of your music videos?
Ans. Yes certainly. I always want there to be a meaning with every video I create. I had a music video last year entitled Life which had the story of a Young Family with a daughter struggling to provide and asking God for guidance. There’s different meanings of the video that I wish the audience can take from and with Joyride it has a deeper meaning than just a Joyride its a fun video and track but it has other pieces behind it.
6. Do you collaborate with others? What is that process?
Ans. Yes I have a collaborated with a few artists. I would say it’s the most challenging finding someone who suits the vibe of your track and getting verses or hooks sent. Most of my collabs are done online conversing albeit one time I done a track OMG with Man like Nells in his studio. Other than that it’s usually by email.
6. Please discuss how you interact with and respond to fans?
Ans. I interact with them mostly through social media, giving updates on what I’m doing and anything I’ve got releasing. When fans show love I’m always grateful. It’s always nice to know when someone tells you their music touches them or it rocks a party or they felt my performance, kind words always give me the willpower to continue to create great music for people. End of the day it’s about giving to the people and making them happy.
7. What is your favourite part about this video?
Ans. Everything. JoshVisuals done his thing. He’s a talented director . Worked with him on so many occasions and the video was a three month project from Jan 2018- March 2018. We filmed GoKarting and seperate scenes around London. I like the whole video game aspect, and general feedback love it.
8. Have you ever dealt with performance anxiety?
Ans. Yes when you’re about to go on stage or perform it comes but the adrenaline starts pumping you see the people loving it you just go with it and it’s a wonderful feeling.
9. Tell me about your favourite performance venues?
Ans. My fav venue to perform was Karma in London because I performed Joyride and I had the place rocking man. It was lit.
10. What advice would you have for someone wanting to follow in your footsteps?
Ans. Trust in God, believe in yourself don’t quit, even when it’s hard make sure you give your best and keep doing your thing Slicko.
