1. Hello, Mr. KingZiLLa. It is an absolute delight to have this interview with you. First of all, congratulations on the release of your new single ‘AH SUCKERPUSS DELICIOUS LOLLIPOP ADVENTURE’. So far, the responses have been great. How do you feel?
Ans. I feel good thank you for asking, it’s always good when your work is being appreciated and viewed by so many it’s a beautiful thing.
2. Can you share with the readers the events that led to the conception of the track? What were the primary factors that inspired the verses?
Ans. Well, the whole concept of this track comes from the development of characters for the Galactic Kannibals a project that was made with my good friend Traa Daniels of the NU-METAL band P.O.D. This is why you hear that name mentioned within the 1st verse it is a crazy universe of characters with a great storyline that eventually we will get 2 and develop into a movie theme and branding. There’s more to it than meets the eye in this track with more to come with these characters.
3. Was there anything in particular that you wanted listeners to take back from the song when they listened to it?
Ans. It’s a fun song to start off with it just makes you feel like having fun at least that’s what it was like for us when creating it. There’s also some very serious things about the song as well in the bridge we mention things about CERN which is a very dangerous situation to humanity on this planet, Just because you have the science or the know-how to do something does not mean that you should go forth and do it. There’s always a bigger meaning to everything even for the listener of this track.
4. What was the greatest stumbling block you came across while making the song and how did you overcome it?
Ans. Well after I had certain instruments in place on the track there was always the sense that it wasn’t completed yet. Some things went beyond my capability to do therefore I had to find a great guitar player to play on the track it really needed that as well as horns. Thankfully for me, I was able to work with one of the best guitars I feel for the song Mike Brown Jr he did an outstanding job which helped put my parts in place perfectly. Then there was Rod Maurice who helped greatly with the horn arrangements I had some there but when he came in it took everything to a whole other level really appreciate his contribution to the song. At that moment when all of these parts came together it became very easy to put the lyrics together. BRO.BLAKE especially had a great time writing his parts it made everything an enjoyable event we felt a victory when we heard it in completion.
5. When did you first get acquainted with the musical soul in you and what was the turning point that made you realize you wanted to pursue a career in music?
Ans. I was into music at a very young age it was my calling, I was never into sports it was always listening to sounds. The calling became very clear after I had played drums for so many artists and had been signed to a record label that I needed to do things for myself go out and really be me and not what someone else wanted me to be. That’s when things got real for me developing the music you hear now with my partner BRO.BLAKE.
6. When you first started in the industry what were some of the greatest challenges that came your way that you weren’t prepared for back then?
Ans. The business! This is something that when you are an artist or a musician climbing up the ladder you are not really ready for. This industry unfortunately especially today is all about the business your talent only makes up about 10% of what has really required the rest of it is about handling how this industry wants you to sell a brand for them because without that you are no use to them that was a hard thing to get over. Today being independent means you are your own record label you must put money into promoting your brand it makes no sense to spend all the money on your production and then not have one dime to spend on promoting that content when you finally understand this everything falls into place.
7. How did the realization dawn upon you that DUB-FUNK was what you wanted to dip your feet into?
Ans. DUB-FUNK It’s a new genre that we openly embraced cause when developing this music we were pulling from heavy electronic music influences but yet having a funk groove tone underneath it, it opened us up to being able to pull all kinds of influences into it for the listener’s ear WE LOVE IT!
8. Tell us about the advent of your partnership with BRO.BLAKE and what was it your music that clicked the most?
Ans. BRO.BLAKE and I go back man we played together in a show called The Madhattan Show a great friendship was formed from it. We started writing together around 2017 everything just came together so well that it was awesome!
9. Looking back, what was the best advice you have received for your music and how did it help you in the long run?
Ans. For me, the best advice I got was to be a musician for the people and not a musician for other musicians. What this means is to play what is right for the songs don’t play what you feel is right to impress others with your skill set. Different forms of music require different levels of musicianship and with the kind of music that we do we want to be the people’s musicians that they can listen to and have fun.
10. How did the name ‘KingZiLLa’ come into the picture, and what made you decide that it was what you wanted your professional name to be?
Ans. Great question so now I have to give you a great answer lol! We all a group of us I mean Traa Daniels and his wife and some other friends were eating at a restaurant And my wife says at the dinner table you know what Kevyn did on my birthday, And everybody just said what did he do and then she said he took me to the movies to see Godzilla and everyone started laughing at me. At this moment Traa started humming the Godzilla theme song and then went KingZiLLa strikes again lol. My only defense was hey she received a lot of gifts which the ladies at the table weren’t having it. But later when thinking about what he called me I thought it was an awesome thing I started developing a story around the name and other characters and then I started writing music and that’s how this whole thing was born.
11. You mentioned that you are currently working on the record ‘EPISODE Z’ and ‘MANIC SOUND EXPULSION’ record ‘Light Induced Tomorrow’. What can your fans expect from them?
Ans. Both of these records will be released sometime this year right now, you are hearing singles from these 2 records. I’m really enjoying producing these 2 records it’s been a lot of fun so far can’t wait for everyone to hear the end results. They both are bringing something new to the DUB-FUNK sound.
12. If there is one piece of advice that you learned first-hand in your career that you would like to pass on to budding artists, what would it be?
Ans. Always be true to who you are learn from the greatest that have done it before you and then write your own blueprint from it. Skies the limit with your creativity so don’t 2nd guess yourself just do it.
