Daily Music Roll: Please tell us more about your music, genre, and soundscape.
Andronyx: My music generally starts with the lyrics. As a writer, the storytelling and meaning behind the song is most important. I try to find a balance between communicating my own story while leaving the song ambiguous enough for the listener to form their own interpretation. I write out themes and concepts for the song, building lyrics on that. My sound is fluid and blends many genres. I’m most influenced by R&B and Rock music.
Daily Music Roll: You are a poet and a songwriter. How important a part do lyrics play in a song?
Andronyx: Lyrics are the foundation. I love to play around with different instrumentation and sounds depending on the mood of the song but the words should be able to stand alone and still communication an essential message.
Daily Music Roll: Is your music influences by any of the contemporary pop or rock artists out there?
Andronyx: Absolutely! John Legend, Sam Smith, James Bay and Leon Bridges just to name a few.
Daily Music Roll: How did you realize that music is the way of expression for you?
Andronyx: I was a quiet, shy kid growing up. I didn’t have many friends. Being gay with strict, religious parents in the hood of New Jersey made it difficult for me to find my voice. I struggled with verbally communicating my thoughts and feelings. Something about listening to other voices sing of challenging experiences was soothing. I often sat alone and listened to music for hours. Writing became a natural outlet for me. I would write poems and short stories as a form of expression. As early as I can remember, music has always been that for me.
Daily Music Roll: What are your upcoming plans for your music career?
Andronyx: I plan to continue writing my story. As a man who has struggled to find his voice it’s important to me to let the world know who I truly am. My first single is just the beginning.
Daily Music Roll: Do you think music has the ability to transform social impediments into something positive?
Andronyx: Yes! I believe the best art is produced through barriers and obstacles. I believe my art speaks to that.
Daily Music Roll: How impactful is music in the overall growth and development of a person?
Andronyx: For me it’s crucial. I believe storytelling, creating sounds, recognizing patterns and organizing them in a familiar way is a natural part of the human existence.
Daily Music Roll: Do you think live performances, gigs, and concerts are important in connecting to the audience?
Andronyx: Definitely! There’s an emotion and personality conveyed in a live performance that the listener may not perceive through a recording. A performer’s body language and emotional presence during a live performance can completely change the delivery of the message. I also enjoy listening to music with others so being in a crowd of people enjoying the same art elevates the experience to me.
Daily Music Roll: Do you think music can survive solely on digital distribution?
Andronyx: I think it could survive but I don’t believe it should. There are components of a live experience that you simply don’t get from a digital recording.
Daily Music Roll: Any specific songwriter who influences you as a poet the most?
Andronyx: I’m inspired by songwriters like Prince who could pack a powerful, poignant message into any song. His versatility composed ballads like “Purple Rain” and Sinéad O’Connor’s “Nothing Compares 2 U” while creating funk tracks like “1999” and “Little Red Corvette”; all having very hard hitting messages. I’m also influenced by songwriter India.Arie. Her themes of personal development and self-healing promote internal growth I find truly inspiring. Taylor Swift is another songwriting influence. Her storytelling and ability to capture a moment make for very relatable and memorable songs.
Daily Music Roll: Do you have any advice for artists who are just coming out of their shells and into the mainstream?
Andronyx: Just keep going! The path to your success is defined by you. It’s not a linear process someone else can direct. As you grow and evolve so will your art, your talent, and your self-confidence. Be dynamic and allow the inevitable setbacks to become learning lessons.
Daily Music Roll: Do you plan to work on a rock production in the days to come?
Andronyx: For right now I’m focused on the upcoming single, More Than You. I plan to do a few different versions of this song like an acoustic version or a dance remix. I’m excited to showcase this song in different ways.
