In a recent interview, The Hole frontwoman vocalized about her music preferences which led to the reveal that shook the internet. According to Love, she is not much of a Swiftie or a big Madonna or Del Rey fan; instead, she likes the works of artists like Patti Smith, Nina Simone, PJ Harvey, and Debbie Harry. She has always been a person advocating for women in music, but, her reluctant approach to the leading ladies of this industry has ruffled some feathers. And her statement where she said that Swift is not an interesting artist, she might have indicated her decision to re-release.
Love said, “Taylor is not important. She might be a safe space for girls, and she’s probably the Madonna of now, but she’s not interesting as an artist.” She also said about 2024 Coachella headliner Lana Del Rey, “I haven’t liked Lana since she covered a John Denver song, and I think she should take seven years off,” she said. She was clear that her enthusiasm for Lana started waning once she covered a John Denver song, ‘Take Me Home Country Roads’. She added, “Up until ‘Take Me Home Country Roads’ I thought she was great. When I was recording my new album, I had to stop listening to her as she was influencing me too much.”
Love continued to showcase her lack of enthusiasm for artists like Madonna as well. For her, she said, “I don’t like her and she doesn’t like me. I loved Desperately Seeking Susan but for the city of New York as much as her.” Lana Del Rey, Madonna, and Taylor Swift all of them are extremely female popular musicians of this age. Hence, Love has always been vocal about her preferences and she also has been advocating for women in the music industry. In 2023 March, Courtney Love wrote an op-ed, addressing the gender disparity of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, to the Guardian. She titled this piece, “Why Are Women So Marginalized by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame?”
“Taylor is not important. She might be a safe space for girls, and she’s probably the Madonna of now, but she’s not interesting as an artist.”

Love also mentioned that the nominations of 2023 were a ranging reminder of f “just how extraordinary a woman must be to make it into the old boys club.” She said that in 2023 more women were nominated than any other year in the history of the last 40 years. Love concluded with, “If the Rock Hall is not willing to look at the ways it is replicating the violence of structural racism and sexism that artists face in the music industry if it cannot properly honor what visionary women artists have created, innovated, revolutionized and contributed to popular music – well, then let it go to hell in a handbag.”
