The Recording Academy on Friday revised its eligibility criteria locked in for the Grammy Awards in 2024, and made it clear that “Only human creators are eligible to be submitted for, consideration for, nominated for, or win a Grammy Award.” The decision was made to encourage artists to create music rooted in human touch and creativity rather than relying solely on Artificial Intelligence, thereby curbing the use of the application in the industry.
Elaborating further on the same, the Academy has said that though music crafted by AI only will not be qualified, artists can, however, use the application as a tool for enhancing their work, given the human contribution in the piece of music is “meaningful” and amounts to at least 20% of the whole: “If the work is submitted in a songwriting category, there must be meaningful and more than de minimis human authorship in respect of the music and/or lyrics.” Earlier, any individual, no matter how small their contribution could qualify for nominations at the Grammys for a piece of music, but with AI in the picture the requirement emphasizes that the human contribution must be greater than that of the artificial counterpart, thereby creating a delicate and effective balance.
With the global change that was initiated in 2022 when OpenAI, backed by Microsoft Corp., launched ChatGPT, several industrial sectors were seen making a massive shift towards AI reliability. The free chatbot that can generate human-like dialogue on the basis of certain inputs provided has been mushrooming across platforms, helping human creators enhance their work, and in some cases, doing the work for them entirely. This influence has reached areas like writing, photography, and even music, leading to suspicion and panic in several sectors. People working in these arenas now fear unemployment as a result of AI displacing humans and taking over their jobs, leading to widespread protests in several areas.
Artificial Intelligence has been rapidly making its way into the artistic divisions, as well as sectors like finance and customer service. A major controversy took place when AI began to encroach its way into the creative segment, making filmmakers and media companies began to rely on it to create new content and to tweak the works of their existing employees.
The Grammy Awards were first inaugurated in 1959 to celebrate the work and achievements of talented musical souls and have become one of the most prestigious Awards in the industry with the passage of time.
