Alka Yagnik Regrets As She Turned Down An Offer To Work With A. R. Rahman

For a particular reason, Alka Yagnik still regrets not working with A. R. Rahman on a specific project. This is what has happened that influenced her decision.

A.R. Rahman and Alka Yagnik have given some of the most popular releases of the 90s. Hits like ‘Ghanan Ghanan‘, ‘Ramta Jogi’,Taal’, and many others were the created because of their musical charm and ecstatic skill set in this forte. But, before she worked with Rahman she refused to work with him on the movie called ‘Roja’. The reason she turned down the offer was because she didn’t know who Rahman was at that point and also she didn’t hear his music. But she regretted turning down the offer after she listened to the music of the 1992 Mani Ratnam movie.

Within seconds she regretted her decision and she believed it was one of the most “beautiful” songs she had ever heard. She was frustrated about her decision and expressed, “When I heard the songs, I wanted to bang my head on the wall.” Afterwards, when she started to work with Rahman he always reminded her of that song and teased her for turning down the offer and what she missed as a singer. Alka Yagnik expressed that she is so embarrassed of this feeling that she wished she could disappear whenever the topic was brought up. She said, “I wanted to bury myself inside the land.”

In a recent Radio interview Alka Yagnik shared a story of working with A. R. Rahman this is when this story of her turning down the offer Roja emerged. She also mentioned that she wasn’t the only one who joined this musical crime Kumar Sanu was also offered to work with A. R. Rahman, she said, “I then called up Sanu ji. I told him, ‘Sanu ji, I received a phone call from Chennai.’ He was like, ‘Yes, even I did. I won’t sing for them.” This became a story that she could never forget ever after decades, she recalled this incident and said, “AR Rahman was a new name at that time. Nobody, especially in Bombay, knew him. Down south, he was well known. He was a very young boy then. I got a call from Chennai at that time saying that there is a new composer called AR Rahman.”
