In this Penn Badgley’s “Podcrushed” podcast she has addressed her “voice change” in a very chilled-out way. She playfully addressed this criticism which is going on TikTok. She said, “I’ve always done this.” TikTok and other social media platforms are flooded with responses to her intentional voice change. She addressed everything comprehensively and strategically and with a strong mindset. In a video response to her statement, she again wrote “habit (speaking like this for two years) and also vocal health,” with two emojis.
The TikTok clip showcased her vocal shift; she also stated that playing the role of Glinda in her upcoming Wicked films she had to practice this. She further clarified this, she said, “I intentionally change my vocal placement (high/low) often depending on how much singing I’m doing. I’ve always done this BYE.” In the original clip of “Thank You, Next”, which went viral, she sang initially, speaking in a deeper tone after that she transformed her voice to a higher pitch with a softer octave while she started to discuss her music.

This one video has garnered many speculations, theories, and reactions. To this one of the X users commented, “Me when I have to use my customer service voice.” another jested, “Me accidentally slipping my other personalities around the wrong people.” Yet, one of her supporters pointed out, “Yall acting like y’all’s voices don’t change in certain spaces and settings,” that person also added, “Her interview voice is no different, especially cause singers to use to preserve their vocals. Don’t bring no dumb s–t over here.”
Another fan suggested, “Bet you she does this voice change to help ease into the operatic resonance she needs to use for when she sings Glinda s–t.” The Sam & Cat actor has discussed the meticulous preparation for her role as Glinda. In a recent interview with the Zach Sang Show, she shared, “Everything about me, I had to deconstruct to prove to them I could handle taking on this other person.”
She also added, “I had to completely erase popstar Ari, the person they know so well because it’s even harder to believe someone as someone else when you’re so branded as one thing.” She concluded, “had to go all the way to strip that down, come into my callback with no makeup, my hair down, I looked like I was 11 years old.” She elaborated on her journey to make sure that her point of view is out there.
