GLAAD Media Awards do just not celebrate the queer community, this respected award show honors their vocal allies for supporting the LGBTQ community. This year, this award show is recognizing a few incredibly massive stars for their relentless and undaunted efforts. On 8th February, Wednesday, GLAAD announced that exceptionally talented and popular recording artist Bad Bunny and evergreen voice of pop; Christina Aguilera would be receiving two allyship awards at this annual ceremony which will take place on March 30th.
The organization also has announced that actor Jeremy Pope would be receiving the Stephen F. Kolzak award for his work in raising visibility for LGBTQ media professionals. The reason behind choosing Pope for this award is for “breaking barriers across multiple industries as an out LGBTQ media professional.”
The annual vanguard award is going to Bad Bunny. This award is presented to “allies who have made a significant difference in promoting acceptance of LGBTQ people and issues.” Previously mega-stars like Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Jennifer Lopez, Britney Spears, and Cher have received this award.
GLAAD president and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said that the star’s (Bad Bunny) consistent advocacy through his live performances, music videos, or something else, he “redefines the positive influence Latin music artists can have within the LGBTQ community and has set an example for all artists.”
The advocate for change award is given to “a person who, through their work, has changed the game for LGBTQ people around the world,” and Aguilera is the right person for this award. President Bill Clinton and pop superstar Madonna have been the past recipients of this award. Ellis mentioned that she dedicated her hit “Beautiful” to the queer community. Her works are raising money for HIV research. And her staunch opposition to anti-queer policies in the U.S. has made her the right person for this award. Ellis said, Aguilera “loudly and proudly raises the bar for what it means to be a LGBTQ ally today.”
GLAAD previously announced the nominations for the 2023 GLAAD Media Awards. The lists included several LGBTQ artists such as Demi Lovato, Kim Petras, Anitta, Fletcher, and many more for their work in 2022. For their artistic contributions, queer art have gained more definition last year.
