British singer and composer Elton John revealed to a theatre audience on Sunday that he had lost his vision. The 77-year-old musician is one of the best-selling artists of all time. He previously suffered months-long eye infections. On Sunday, he attended the launch of the ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ musical in London’s West End. However, he said that he was unable to watch the performance because of his lost vision.
The ‘Tiny Dancer‘ artist told the audience at a charity gala performance of ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ musical, “As some of you may know, I have had issues and now I have lost my sight. I haven’t been able to see the performance, but I have enjoyed it,” Daily Mail reports. Notably, Sir John wrote the score for the musical. “So it’s hard for me to see it, but I love to hear it, and, boy, it sounded good tonight,” he further said.
The ‘Rocket Man’ singer thanked his husband David Furnish, saying he “has been my rock.”
In September, the musician posted on Instagram that an infection had “left me with only limited vision in one eye”. In an interview with Good Morning America on November 25, the musician admitted “I unfortunately lost eyesight in my right eye in July.” “It’s been four months now since I’ve been able to see.” Although John did not reveal which kind of eye infection caused him his eyesight, he revealed that he had been struggling. “I’m kind of stuck at the moment,” John told GMA. “Going into the studio and recording, I don’t know, because I can’t see a lyric for starters.”
In another interview with ABC News in the US, John said that the infection had left him unable to see out of his right eye and that his left was “not the greatest.” This meant that he could no longer watch or even read anything. This definitely put the possibility of recording any music in the future at risk. “I am healing, but it’s an extremely slow process, and it will take some time before sight returns to the impacted eye,” he added.
Being one of the best-selling artists of all time, Sir Elton John’s career started to peak in the early 1970s. His piano-led rock songs and ballads such as ‘Candle in the Wind’ have helped him maintain his worth and relevance in the global music industry. In his career spanning over a six-decade, he has sold more than 300 million records. He finally said goodbye to his career with a global farewell tour in 2022 and 2023. He played his final show in his native UK at the Glastonbury Festival. His last ever performance was in Sweden and since then he has focused on his family and health.
