Fans of the Australian duo April and The Drift are celebrating the release of the group’s newest track, Yesterday’s News. The pair’s unique and captivating sound has been charming audiences since their debut album in 2019.

“I poured out my feelings one quiet afternoon to write Yesterday’s News,” said April. “I really wanted to take you into the fleeting moment of writing some song and the work it takes to break free from the memories.”

April found inspiration for this track in the countryside mocking around with the blues. Musician, producer, and arranger Fidel Carmona leaned on the jazz genre to bring the song to life. Listeners will immediately identify April’s calming and breathy vocals. The beat from the piano, percussion, and guitar loiter about and add to the feeling April is setting with her words.

“Won’t you please set me free and leave me to forget,” April’s writes in the song. “These bittersweet memories traced with regret.” April’s words go on to describe how fast time seemingly passes, especially in periods of boredom and loneliness.

“I sometimes wonder if we could make this world into a better place by changing our focus from the mind and body and be more open to the spiritual dimensions around us,” said April. “While writing this song, I came to the realization that our existence can be made out of some strange mix of physical and spiritual dimensions with each other and with the Earth.”

Yesterday’s News is being released just weeks after the duo released Souls of Music, another sultry track written about the hopeful connection between people through music. The band burst onto the music scene in 2019 with much acclaim. Their album Shorelines quickly became a hit. Yesterday’s News — along with all the band’s songs — can be played on the April and The Drift website. They also can be heard on Spotify and other streaming platforms.

“Lately when I walk down the street, I come across a lot of people who don’t even give a stranger a smile back,” said April. “This is why I create music. I think that if we just tried to become more aware of all the powers in the world around us, we could be living in a much happier place.”

April and The Drift create music that spans genres. The pair readily says they’ve been influenced by artists ranging from Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Bob Marley, and Leonard Cohen. Their previous work has had hints of reggae, indie folk, pop, soft rock, and the blues. Learn more about April and The Drift at http://aprilandthedrift.com
