The Apple TV+ holiday special A Carpool Karaoke Christmas bore surprises for all the music lovers. Chappell Roan, Dua Lipa, and Lady Gaga, all took part in the special event and Gaga even got a gift for her Little Monsters. Gaga debuted a new cover for the Christmas classic, ‘Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town’. You can head to Apple TV+ to watch the full episode of A Carpool Karaoke Christmas.
The cover by the singer and actress appeared overnight on the streaming services on Monday, December 16th. The track, however, is not your typical Christmas cover, Gaga gave the song a soulful rock twist. The trucks opened with bright electric guitars along with some rock n’ roll scatting from the ‘Judas’ singer. Tumbling organ riffs and pounding drums then push forward the energetic cover. “You better watch out/ You better not cry/ Better not pout/ I’m telling you why,” Gaga belts. “Santa Claus is comin’ to town.”
This holiday recording was accompanied by the singer’s appearance on the surprise Apple TV+ special A Carpool Karaoke Christmas with Zane Lowe. At the event, she performed ‘Santa Claus Is Coming to Town’ with her band and the radio host. This new cover song follows a year of major releases by the superstar. In October, Gaga released ‘Disease’, the lead single from her seventh studio album, ready to be released in February. The track debuted at No. 27 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Only a month prior, the 13-time Grammy winner also surprised listeners with another drop, this time by releasing ‘Harlequin‘, a companion album to Joker: Folie à Deux. This was the sequel of the 2019 Joker film, and in the second edition, Gaga was seen starring opposite Joaquin Phoenix. The LP reached No. 20 on the Billboard 200 in October. This August, the ‘Bad Romance’ singer also released a duet with Bruno Mars. Their collaboration, ‘Die With a Smlie’ spent eight weeks at no. 1 on the Billboard Global 200.
The cover is a rock-oriented arrangement, but Gaga’s take on the song is nothing like the now-classic Springsteen rendition. Gaga’s rendition of “Santa Claus Is Coming to Town” is part of a rich history of covers of this classic, originally penned by Haven Gillespie and J. Fred Coots. While the Jackson 5 and Bruce Springsteen are perhaps the most recognized modern versions, artists like Mariah Carey, Michael Bublé, Justin Bieber, and others have also delighted audiences with their takes on the festive favorite.
