Dua Lipa Double Duty As ‘SNL’ Host And Musical Guest

Dua Lipa pulled double duty beautifully on SNL as she performed as a musical guest and a host on May 4. She performed some hilarious sketches that included a dissection of the ongoing rap beef of Drake and Kendrick Lamar, the ‘Dance The Night Away’ singer performed two songs from her newly released third studio album, ‘Radical Optimism‘. During her dua, she got an introduction from her fellow pop star Troye Sivan, for whom Dua once opened the tour. Lipa then opened Saturday Night Live on May 4th with the summary anthem ‘Illusion’, which was released as a third single from the third studio album. For her second performance, the 28-year-old pop singer received an introduction from comedian Jerry Seinfeld. Following this, she launched a very passionate and enthusiastic delivery of ‘Happy For You‘, the song that closes out ‘Radical Optimism’.

Lipa released her 11-track third studio album ‘Radical Optimism’ on 3 May 2024. This is her first proper album since ‘Future Nostalgia’ was released in 2020 and gave the world one of the most streamed tracks ‘Levitating’. The newly released album features previously released singles by Lipa, ‘Houdini‘, and ‘Training Season‘. The former single debuted at No. 11 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and the latter debuted at No. 27. “[Releasing the album] feels good. It feels for lack of a better word — radically optimistic,” the pop star told Billboard in an interview. Following this, the singer also explained the idea behind the album cover, featuring the ‘New Rules’ singer floating in a wide open ocean and facing a shark fin. “Throughout the whole record, there’s this idea of chaos happening around and me trying to push through it in a way that feels authentic and honest to me.”

May 3rd’s SNL sketch marks the ‘One Kiss’ singer’s third time appearing as musical guest on the show. However, this is the first time she pulled double duty and also hosted the long-running sketch comedy show. Lipa was a musical guest in 2018, and 2020. Now following this Saturday’s episode, season 49 will be wrapped up with two new episodes. One will be on May 11, with former SNL star Maya Rudolph who will be hosting the show for a third time. The second one will be on May 18 with Jake Gyllenhaal who will be hosting the show for the third time and Sabrina Carpenter making her debut as a musical guest on SNL.
