Australian Performing Rights Association (Apra) Awards 2023 took place on Thursday night and Flume took the winning award for the ‘Song of the Year’. The artist received the award for his song ‘Say Nothing’. The song has also topped the Triple J Hottest 100 in 2022.

Written back in 2020, ‘Say Nothing’ features Sydney pop musician May-a and features around the “feelings of post-relationship clarity”. This track appears on Flume’s 2022 album, Palaces. This album is truly a game-changer in his musical career where he took a prominent shift towards warped electronica sound. The album also features international guest artists such as Caroline Polachek and Damon Albarn.

Flume shared this auspicious moment with Sarah Aarons who has co-written the track ‘Say Nothing’. Not to mention but both these music artists have won multiple Apras in the earlier years. In 2018, Sarah Aarons dominated the Apra Awards with her contribution to Zedd’s globally hit song, The Middle.

Song of the Year is the only peer-voted category at the award ceremony where the award winner is determined by airplay and royalties gained from music by the artist. The Apra board of directors is making a change over other categories like songwriter and breakthrough songwriter of the year.

On the other hand, Sampa the Great won the award for the Breakthrough Songwriter of the Year who is a Zambian music artist with an Australian background. While receiving the award, Sampa said, “I choose to share my culture.” The artist further said in her acceptance speech, “I choose to share stories from my country, and I choose to share them in my language with this album.”

Similarly, The Kid Laroi is on the list who won three awards at the Apras last year for his blockbuster collaboration project with Justin Bieber named, ‘Stay’.
